impact of Da Vinci’s work was seen when he returned to Florence. Artists and the public went to the church of Santissima Annunziata to see his study for The Virgin and Child with St. Anne. He organized his figures into a pyramid and gave the lanscape a soft atmoshpheric haze. Da Vinci was inspirate by nature, philosphy, and science. Raphael borrowed the format of Leonardo’s Mona Lisa for his portrait paintings. He also study Michelangelo’ sculptures. Within 5 years, Raphael absorbed what Florence had to offer and began to make his own artistic statement. Raphael painting The School of Athens in the Stanza della Segnatura. On the oppposite wall is La Disputa which is regarded as one of the finest examples of the High Renaissance style. He creates a balance between the movement of the figures and the order and stability of the space. Used linear perspective which is a High Renaissance technique. Michelangelo is well known for his ceiling painting of the Sistine Chapel. Michelangelo saw himself as a scultptor, not a painter. Contemporaries talked about his terrbilita and divine genious. Leonardo, Raphael, and Michelangelo played a vital role in raising the painter’s status to a new level. Their achievements set standards that were impossible to surpass which led to the emergence of the style of Mannerism. The film and the book describe Raphael’s School of Athens pretty much the same. They both mention that it was commissioned by Pope Julius the 2nd for the Stanza della Segnatura. The film does not mention that it was one our of four frescos that depict distinct branches of knowledge and that the School of Athens depicts philosophy. The film mentions that there are mathematicians and philosphers but it doesn’t say that there is also astronomers, geographers, and naturalists. The film and book both mention that many artists are included in this painting such as Leonardo, Bramante, Michelangelo and Raphael.
The film talked more about the artists towards the end of their life than the book did. The book only mentions the works they did and the places they went to whereas the film mentions their work, their life, and their death. I would have liked to see Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa in the film as it is a well known painting of his that still holds lots of mysterys. It would fit best in the film where they were discussing da Vinci and his works. They mentioned The Last Supper but they didn’t talk about significance of the painting or why he did it. I think it would improve the film because the audience would better understand the da Vinci’s intentions in his paintings. There are few people who have not heard of the Mona Lisa, so discussing this painting would include more people as most people know of this work. The film mentions Virgin and Saint Anne of 1507 to show the qualities that made him influential but I don’t think that many people are familiar with this painting. I have taken an art class every year for the past four years and I know very little about this painting, and have only heard it be mentioned a few
times. One question for the narrator would be how sure are you that your interpretations of the High Renaissance and its artists are correct? My second question would be could there possibly be more artworks from the High Renaissance that have yet to be discovered?
