High School Curriculum
High school can be a challenging period in the life of any teenager, but I suspect that I had one of the more rough transitions from middle school out of those in my class. As soon as I walked through the doors on my first day at Wahlert Catholic High School, I knew that I was not ready for it. I walked with my backpack slung over my shoulders, containing new notebooks waiting to be filled, pencils waiting to be sharpened, and a computer just waiting to spend several hours trying in vain to connect to the school Internet, but I still felt unprepared. As we were hauled into the gym for our, “You’re a high schooler now so you have to be mature and not cause problems,” talk, I began to feel queasy. As I was pushed around from class to class by …show more content…
Mrs. Ressler seemed nice enough, but it sounded like the class might be a difficult one. Computer Science and AP World History seemed like challenges. Biology would be rough. Geometry would be one of the easier ones. Spanish, Choir, and Religion should be okay. Despite a fairly difficult schedule, my focus was elsewhere. I was looking at the extracurriculars available to students. Interact club seemed interesting, and I liked the idea of the ski/snowboard club. Mostly, I was intent on running for something on the Senate. After looking into the requirements of Senate I determined that I would run for Freshmen Class Vice President. I prepared a speech, and I took the final draft to Ms. Wagner for approval. I also brought two posters and a T-shirt reading, “Vote for Pedro,” in an obvious nod to the movie “Napoleon Dynamite.” The name Pedro was crossed out and I wrote my name over it. Ms. Wagner didn’t like it for some …show more content…
We were supposed to find out the results of the election in seventh period. Finally, Ms. Wagner’s voice crackled over the loudspeaker. “These are the results of the Freshmen Class Senate Election. The president is Sophia Shubatt. The vice president is Eric Leigh...” After that I stopped listening. I was in a state of relative shock. Not until later that day would I find out that Kamryn Bounds and Annie Herman were the secretary and treasurer; I was too busy being patted on the back. That was when I felt like I had truly become a part of Wahlert Catholic. I had become a part of a great tradition, and I felt like I could take on the world. It was a great day, but, unfortunately, I had show choir practice

It was a cold, winter’s night in Washington. Everywhere there were people going about their day-to-day life. It was a particularly busy night, however, because it was the night of an election. In the coming hours, Americans will be casting their vote for president of the United States. The election was between Democrat, James Bakersfield, and Republican, Clare Thomlin. James was a tall, handsome man in his thirties, and was projected to win in a landslide. The former governor of New York, he was an experienced lawmaker, who in almost the entire two-year campaign, he had kept his cool. His opponent Clare was an egotistical, short, ugly woman in her sixties, and she was projected to lose big time. Clare was the CEO of a weapons manufacturing company, who has had more than a dozen scandals in her campaign.…

Last year I was asked to be a small group leader for incoming 7th grade students this year. Having known what it felt like to be a new student in a completely different school I jumped on the opportunity to help. I, like Billy tried to be open and welcoming, encouraging the 7th graders to become involved in the Xaverian community just like Billy did for me and I’m sure many others. My goal was to be able to help the 7th graders in any situation whether they needed advice or just want to share a funny story. As a student council senator I would try to do the same. I would strive to always be friendly and kind to all Xaverian students wanting everyone to feel welcome. I would encourage other to join clubs and activities and go on service projects like X-Act and Christmas in the city. Most of all I would want each and every student at Xaverian to feel accepted and to feel excited, knowing that they are each a key part in the larger, greater, Xaverian…

Growing up we all looked forward to starting high school, but how many of us enjoyed every bit of it? High school was a moment that I looked forward to; thoughts of doing what I finally wanted to flood my mind. In June 2008, I received my GSAT result and was delighted when I saw that I passed for the William Knibb Memorial High School; although a bit disappointed because it wasn’t on my top five list. High school was not everything that I expected. In a few days, I met a few nice people. The first week of school was amazing, but after a few weeks things started getting intense. High school; however, was no bed of roses, especially when it came onto the subjects, reports, and school rules.…

In all of the horror of standing up and speaking in front of a crowd of thousands, I had finally reached the zenith of my juvenile existence and ascended into adulthood. The next day did not even matter, as I had achieved a victory that no one could take from me. However, I did still want to win that office, and it eventually came time for that almost dreaded moment of the big reveal of who would be the next North Carolina State Senior Beta Club President. Moreover, the minutes prior to the big reveal seemed like hours and I could feel my heart racing; but suddenly the moment had come and out of left field I heard my name announced as the next State President. Then I was overtaken with a jubilant attitude that I had never felt before and complete awe seized me as I could barely get out my acceptance speech through my ecstatic emotions, and it was during that weekend that I experienced the marvelous feeling of reaching…

“I want to see the beauty. In the ugly, in the sink, the suffering, in the daily, in all the days before I die, the moments before I sleep.” (goodreads.com) High school is expressed as the best of times, but also as the worst of times. Regardless of whether we desire to or not, it is a part of our lives we will remember forever. It is when we start to figure out who we are, and decide the life we want to live. While we go through this significant phase of our life, it is essential that we appreciate it to the best of our ability by focusing on living in the moment, taking the time to enjoy ourselves and helping others enjoy themselves too.…

Waking up on the morning of the first day of high school felt like butterflies took over my stomach. I had to put together an impressing outfit, fix my hair, and put on appealing makeup. Knowing that in about an hour I would be entering a totally different school environment than what I’m used to frightened me. Within every period of the school day, the butterflies started to flutter out of my stomach and into my new learning atmosphere. Although students tend to fear high school and think it is a nightmare to transition from middle school to the next level, attending high school is not much of a dramatic change.…

Once you’ve been in school for nearly 12 years of your life you think you know all of the tricks to conquering the school year. When a problem arises you think you know the easy way out of it or the perfect way to avoid it. Some kids probably believe that as you continue on through your education these problems will just simply decrease. Many if not all people change at one point or another during the course of their life. Majority of this change occurs during the high school years and even more specifically, freshman year. Many people associate the term “freshman” with being naive and asinine. However, in actuality during this period we as young adults are just attempting to find ourselves. “So much is still to be learned! So long a road lies before us, and what care we must take if we must travel it alone”(Rand 54). The development of a teen going through their high school years can be broken up into 3 stages; the beginning, the middle, and the end of the freshmen year.…

I used to spend endless nights wide-eyed, anxiously dreading a high school life teeming with harsh peers and hollow hallways, immersed in a cold atmosphere eternally void of familiarity's warm embrace. The curriculum in today's schools has survived relatively unchanged for many years. It was created in a completely different world, one where computers were not used and jobs for the uneducated were easy to find. The world has changed significantly since then, but should the education system? School is strongly believed to be a place of knowledge and prepare us for our challenging life ahead. It provides us with the numerous educations and so, I consider that when one says that the school curriculum provides everything that the average teenager needs to know for adult life, I mostly agree however, there are some points that must not be ignored and put across such as lack of experience and trust which cannot be gained from just the curriculum provided by the school.…
