Easter in Russia
As you may know Russia has been claimed to be a religion center during the scores of decades. Russian people honor their traditions and most of them follow the Orthodox religion. That is why Easter in Russia is one of the most important religion events for whole nation.
This holiday is dedicated to the resurrection from the dead of Jesus and rooted in the Christianity history. So at this holiday tens of thousands of people flocked to the country's churches to attend solemn midnight processions with crosses and icons commemorating the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Russian Easter service may usually lasts till the early morning. And it is remarkable that only on this day these services also attended by those families that do not regularly attend church.
After all processions usually a traditional Easter breakfast takes place. Russian Easter foods include kulich -Russian Easter bread, paskha - a dish made from cheese and other ingredients, usually formed into the shape of a pyramid, and of course the most substantial Easter meal - colored eggs. Eggs the mandatory attribute and the symbol of Christian Easter are traditionally painted red or may have own ornament and manner of drawing. According to tradition eggs may be cracked one by one and the strongest one may be cut into pieces - one piece for each family member at the Easter table. Sometimes the food is blessed by the church before being eaten.
During the Easter day people visit their friends and kinsman with little presents and, of course, since an old Russian tradition they send gifts to orphanages, hospitals and prisons. And throughout the holiday people congratulate each other by saying "Christ is risen!" and reply with, "He is truly risen!".
