Holmesville House Fire Case Study
PAINT TWP. — Even though they weren't in the house, a working smoke detector proved beneficial for a Holmesville area family when a fire started in the basement of their home Tuesday night.
Firefighters were dispatched to 9102 State Route 83, at 8:56 p.m., after homeowner Alvin Hilty called 9-1-1 to report his home was filling with smoke and there was smoke coming through the baseboards from the basement, according to Prairie Township Volunteer Fire Department Chief Reuben Miller.
The first truck arrived at 9:04 p.m., at which time first responders found there had been a fire in the basement, which had spread to the subfloor above, said Miller, noting that even prior to firefighters' arrival Hilty had put out the original fire with a fire extinguisher.
From inside the single-story home, Miller said, firefighters mounted an interior attack to put out the remaining fire, which had made its way into the floor and walls of the living area. The fire was contained by 9:29 p.m., and crews, after ensuring all hot spots were out, were back in quarters at 10:38 p.m.

Hilty discovered the fire after he heard a smoke alarm going off within the house as he stood outside the neighbor's home. He entered the house to find it filling with smoke, prompting him to call for assistance, said Miller, noting that had it not been for Hilty hearing the smoke detectors, “it would have been a lot different and they could have lost their whole house.”
There were no injuries.
Mutual aid was provided by first responders from Holmes Fire District No. 1 and the South Central Fire

The fire began at 11:07 PM, on Thursday, February 20, 2003. The band Great White was the main event of the night. After only half a minute into their performance, the pyrotechnics ignited the sound insulation (polyurethane foam) that was around the stage. The ignition of the polyurethane foam built up enough heat to ignite the wooden panels above the stage spreading the fire throughout the building. At first, the audience thought that the flames were a part of the show. Seconds after the audience realized that the fire was unplanned, they headed toward the main entrance trying to escape, not knowing that three other exits in the building existed. One hundred people lost their lives that day.…

Also, based on the statements made by the occupants regarding smoking cigarettes, I would want to know more about how they normally discarded/dispose of their cigarette butts. Are they dumping an ashtray in a trashcan inside or outside? Could there have been an ashtray on the table next to the sofa which contained either a still lit cigarette or a smoldering cigarette? If so, what type of ashtray? Metal, glass, heavy or lightweight? If any windows were open and the ashtray was light enough, could it have blown off or blown then cigarette off onto the sofa and ignited the fire? This is a working theory because there are questions which need to be…

The response would be that they would first need to minimise the risk this meaning that the stuff would need to of had made sure that they checked the building to make sure that no child is left behind. Before the staff starts the job they would need of had gone through training where they would know what action to take and how to get the children out safely and as fast as possible. Staff are also taught fire aid to help the child whilst the ambulance come, so when the little boy inhaled too much smoke he would need to be checked to see that there's no toxic in his system which he could of inhaled and that his breathing is fine; because the boy fell down a couple steps they would need to tap his whole body to make sure that there are no broken bones and see his sprained ankle to see if it damaged more. The staff should know all the fire exits to take and the appointed location where they would be safe and away from the fire without any harm. Also if there is a child who cannot walk they would need to be taken into consideration and assisted out of the building, if the child…

The fire was around a small barn belonging to the O'Leary family that surrounded an alley behind a street called Dekoven Street. The first building to be consumed by the fire was the shed next to the barn, but many city officials never determined the exact cause of the fire. Over the years there were speculations. The most popular speculation was Mrs. O’Leary’s cow; therefore, others suspect that a group of men were gambling inside the barn and knocked over a lantern. There were still others that suggested that the fire connected to other fires in the area that day.…
