In his music video of the hit song “Home”, Joseph Toman describes Phillip Phillip’s life on the road during his music tour after winning American Idol. (I know I need to put something here, I just don’t know what) With these rapidly changing moments in the music video Toman compares musicians to common man by claiming that both have fast paced lives and lose themselves in the moment as a result of chasing after their successes. With the inclusion of these fast changing moments in this music vedio, Toman conveys the transient lifestyle of musicians and also relates it to the life of common people. In the video there are several images in which Phillips is seen with people he is close to, such as when he is in the bar. Toman includes …show more content…

There is a specific scene in the video in which Toman uses raindrops to represent speed. In the beginning of the video the amount of raindrops and their speed is very low. Since Toman includes this image along with Phillips getting ready for a concert, the raindrops seem to indicate the speed of Phillips career as a musician. The low number of raindrops in the beginning of the video indicates the serene nature of Phillips career as it starts out. As the video progresses, the speed and vast number of raindrops greatly increases, as does the tension in Phillips career. Toman shows Phillips getting more and more concerts and spending a greater amount of time preparing for those concerts. With this intent focus Phillips is forced to spend more time on his career and less time for other things happening in his life. (I think I need to work this in better together) Upon graduation, success-minded people could easily relate to Phillips’ career lifestyle. These people are later on driven to reach their goals, and as a result are forced to put a hiatus on their relationships. For example, as people are looking for jobs, their lives are slow because many are venturing out on their own for the first time, so their lives are fairly calm, like the beginning of a rainstorm. However, as people delve into their careers and settle down, …show more content…

For example, when Phillip’s eats alone in the café, he appears to be reflecting upon his newfound successes. The eating time Phillip’s sets aside for himself represents a time of self-reflection, because he is alone, enjoying his time and not working. Toman describes this down time as much needed to break apart from the chaos and hectic nature associated with Phillip’s paced life. ( I think I should go back and look at my previous paragraphs) Toman shows that even though Phillips is in a prime moment of his career, he also needs down time.Toman is also able to use this scene as a way to relate Phillips to success minded common people who are overwhelmed with their lives. Toman shows that even though Phillips has a fast-paced, work-focused life, he is able to find few moments to slow himself down and evaluate himself ( I don’t know if evaluates really goes here). ( I wanted to incorporate the following article(s) here as well

Diane McWhorter is a successful writer gaining great recognition for her Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction book, Carry Me Home which she read a few pieces from last night. Before reading however, she shared with the audience a few words on how she developed the idea to start her book. Beginning with writing what was happening during the time, which civil rights were the center focus. Although setting up the writing may be useless to some people, experienced writers know it’s very important. Similarly during her presentation, in McWhorter’s case, she described it as, “fun, but tough”. She also mentioned that depending on the topic one is writing on, background information is important to a nonfiction storyline. Also stating that if one is…

Described as “dual citizens,” the brass band performers have two drastically different identities (5). Although their performances enable them to be “exceptional icons,” these musicians suffer from poverty. They struggle to earn a living, as they are paid with little salaries. Most of the musicians are not full-time performers; in order to keep the livelihood, they cannot focus solely on their career. During the “New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival,” Keith Frazier, the member of Rebirth Brass Band, questions that “‘We know who we are. Do you know who we are?’” (100). The musicians themselves have a clear interpretation of their duality. However, there is a confusion of identities from the outsiders’ view. People focus only on their iconic appearance and hardly notice their poverty. As Sakakeeny remarks, it is problematic that the performers are the one who create the brass band culture, while the “cultural economics ends with these same workers, who are the last to receive any financial return” (86). Sakakeeny illustrates several vivid contrasts about musicians’ life stories. That is, the musicians work too much; however, they receive too little. Additionally, their second-line performance exhibits an up-beat tempo and mobilizing atmosphere, while the musicians endure an insecure and tragic life. In order to provide a…

“Nothing connects to the moment like music” Sheffield pg. 12. This sentence in the book is nothing but true. Most people remember the memories they’ve had or the time something took place because of the song they heard or were listening to during that event. Many of times I have related things to music and brought the musical connection into my life. Sheffield talks about how there were many of different mix tapes for different things like tapes for making out, dancing, falling asleep, doing the dishes and even walking the dog. I can personally connect to what he is stating because I have a playlist for most of the things I do: working out, driving in my car, “depressing” playlist, playlists for certain concerts I’m going to, shower playlist and so many more. I believe people have these…
