As I know, the majority of Mexican
population are catholic and conservative people, therefore in Mexico, discrimination against homosexuals is still shown. A reason of this may be that the population think they (homosexuals) are sinners because they do not follow god’s laws. Moreover, they can break these “rules” or can corrupt catholic values. So, they are not accepted, in the other way around, they are rejected, avoided, hated, and ignored. In other words, they are treated badly. In here, I am not saying that this happens with all the people, actually the number of citizens who are in pro of homosexuals, has increased.
In fact, Mexico has approved some laws in pro of homosexuals. Some of the rights that homosexual people now have are the next ones. They are allowed already to get married even though they are same-sex couples. Furthermore, it is permitted to them to adopt and to have children in their house, something that there were fighting about.
But as it was expected, protest started since it happens because the disagreement of the other party. Indeed, in Guadalajara city, for example, when the Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender group marched asking for their rights before they were taken in consideration, the police always arrived as soon as they were known, so the mass of people had to run away in order to not be caught because these kind of marches were forbidden like if they went toward against the laws. So they were treated badly even by authorities, who used violence.
In conclusion, I think that, although Mexico is changing, it happens little by little, and with many closed minds yet.
