I remembered the moment when I was faced with a dire situation, when I was assistant coaching our local Jr. High Football team. The game was Lowell v.s Gilchrist. It was early in the 3rd quarter when we witnessed one of the players falling without getting hit. The coaches on the other team scrabbled to aid the young athlete, yet they didn’t understand was wrong. I came over to assistant, yet was pushed away, probably because I was only 16 and didn’t look like I could really help. Then I noticed the 6th grader twitching and realized that he was in anaphylactic shock. That’s when I suddenly asserted my place and started barking out orders. Within moments I was in charge and I took over on the care of the child. A woman that came over (I assumed…

For my service this year, I was involved with Applecross Opal Nursing Home. Opal age care was a great help to me in opening my eyes to the desperate need for an extra pair of hands and the importance of nursing homes. Not only to the individual admitted in, but also to their families and friends. As I would arrive at 12.00 every time, I would go straight into lending a hand with lunch. Handing out the meals, packing away, cleaning up and keeping an eye on a few of the residents was my first job done. Then I would wonder through the compound talking to the residents, playing and colouring in with them and I would gather and assist them to and from their rooms. With all these jobs, you had to keep a look out for and take extra care with some of the more dependant residents.…

    1. As a carer your role is not to do things for the individuals you care for but to do the tasks including the service user. A support workers role is to work in partnership with the individual and support their decisions, offer as much or as little assistance the service user requires for their care and support them to do as much as possible for themselves. If you provide too much care for an individual they can lose their skills and independence and not learn any new life skills. By providing support and encouraging the individual to participate in their daily living needs you are helping them to develop and maintain their skills for everyday life. Skills are easily regained if the service user is shown how to complete a task. For example if a service user is having a shower and would usually have his hair washed for him, why not show him how to wash his own hair. Whilst providing personal care for my residents when it comes to hair washing, I normally provide the shampoo and apply the shampoo to the service users palm. I then mimmick washing my own hair and ask the service user to copy me. This is also useful in showing a service user where needs to be washed. I also talk to the service user about the task they are doing, for example I would mimmick washing my arms and say wash your arms that's it, don't forget underneath your arm. This is enforcing new skills as well as maintaining them, it also empowers the service user as they have achieved this task themselves with minimal support.…

When we obtain knowledge and learnings through lessons, it is important to share this information with others. As a professional, dissemination this knowledge is even more important. When professors and faculty publish their work, they increase their own prestige along with the institution where they are working (Jeffress & Lyle, 2012). More importantly, as Forsyth, Wright, Scherb, and Gaspar (2010, p. 15) state, “Knowledge synthesis, translation, and exchange are vital to strengthen health care, inform policy, and improve practice decisions based on current clinical evidence”. The importance of disseminating evidence-based practice (EBP) finding is for health care professionals…

    Bedside Manner Essay

“Compassion is a complex and challenging dance in which the nurse moves back and forth with the patient on cue in a caring receptivity” (Younger, 1995, p. 69). “Beside Manner” is not a trait that every nurse starts out with or ends up with when they finish their career. I think that “bedside manner” is something that we learn and it continues to grow throughout our lives within our work and personal lives. I think that some people have a nurturing side that makes them want to care for patients and therefore compassion goes along with that. I think that as a nursing profession we are taught to know how to care for patients in a medical setting and by the textbook. Each individual then needs to take that knowledge and learn how they can then find a compassionate and caring manner in which to care with patients. Nurses are expected to handle all kinds of scenarios that are thrown at us, and we need to always keep the…
