University of Houston: The Organizational Structure
When you hear the words Shasta, “coogs”, and red pride, a Houstonian will automatically affiliate them with the University of Houston. The University of Houston, founded in 1927, is Texas’s third largest university and recently was named a Tier One research university. With over 39,000 students, the university is one of the most diverse universities with more than 300 undergraduate and graduate programs, both on campus and online. Along with the previous mentioned, the university also has various other divisions. Some examples are athletics, governmental relations, student affairs, and university advancement. Each function plays a significant part in making the University of Houston a successful institution. The following will discuss some of the divisions within the university that influence and determine the organizational structure.

Campus services cover the auxiliary services of the university, such as the bookstore, copy center, parking & transportation, dining services, and more. Employee services are the point of contact for payroll and the human resource department. Human resource serves as an important guide for employees; it provides information on employee benefits, training, and policy interpretation. Financial services, which can also be known as accounting services, consists of the following departments: general accounting, property management, bank reconciliation & endowment accounting, research accounting, and student accounting. Lastly, student services are similar to the campus services, with the inclusion of student financials. The office of student financial services, also known as the Bursar’s Office, is responsible for the billing of tuition and fees for admitted students. This involves creating payment plans to help students get their accounts paid off as well as sending bills.
University Advancement and University Relations The division of university advancement serves the University of Houston by building and strengthening relationships with diverse communities that encourage investment in and support of the university, its programs and proposals.
