James Albert Banks was born on September 24th 1941, to Matthew Banks and Lula Holt Banks , by occupation farmers . He was born near Marianna ( Lee county) in eastern Arkansas. He began his education in McCullough Union School and completed his high school in Newsome Training School , Aubrey. He graduated from Robert Russa Moton High School in 1960. Bank was awarded with Bachelors degree in elementary education and social science from Chicago state university and masters and doctoral degree from Michigan State University. He initiated his career in the field of teaching at Forrest Park School and served as faculty, assistant & associate professor in UW College of Education. James Bank have formulated 4 different approaches of multicultural education and integrated it in the curriculum to bring about transformation or modification in curricula .This approach will help the teachers to promote social awareness amongst the students so that they can understand the importance of challenges in discrimination. The Contributions Approach:
This approach is well known as heroes and holiday approach. It brings about no major change in curriculum structure and objectives but schools commemorate specific days, weeks, and months in regards to various ethnic heroes coming up from diverse culture .Teacher makes use of various activities to celebrate these events so that the students gain suitable learning experiences out of it by exploring the history of cultural significance in depth. It is the easiest approach to use, on the other hand it is unimportant as it discusses very little on social equality, racism, poverty. The Transformation Approach
This approach brings about changes in the framework of curriculum , and the students are encouraged to read the books which is having the content related to ethnicity. On self reading students develop self realisation about the importance of ethnicity which expands their critical thinking and logical reasoning power.
The Social Action Approach
After acquiring the knowledge about various social issues , students participate in activities so that they can take necessary actions against the social issues and stand for the rights of those people coming up from various ethnic backgrounds.
