People had worried that Religion would compel Kennedy to make one decision over another, more out of faith than reason. Roman Catholic prejudice still lurked in America at that time, which was a significant factor in his loss of some states during the election. Religion also benefitted Kennedy in some states, which in the end helped him beat Nixon by the small margin of about 118,000 out of 69 million people. Kennedy took an interest in literature when he was young, writing three books in his life, “A Nation of Immigrants,” Profiles in Courage,” and “Why England Slept.” Unlike some previous presidents, Kennedy wanted to help the Civil Rights Movement. Kennedy helped the Civil Rights Movement by advocating “more vigorous measures to win the negro the right to vote, the right to employment in companies doing business with the federal government, and the right to federal appointments.” (Schlesinger) He also advocated the Civil Rights Movement by putting together a major civil rights legislation.
