Rome with its conquests not only got foreign lands, but also was influenced by foreign ideas. Rome conquered many places, but the place that influences the most was Greece. Morey (1901) implies that “when Greece was conquered by Rome, Rome was civilized by Greece”. Rome adopted their ideas in religion, philosophy, literature, art, and manners. Let me illustrate how Rome was shaped and refine into this powerful empire.
Religion and Philosophy
Romans were Polytheism, which means they worshiped many gods like the Greeks who worship Zeus, Athena, etc. Under this Greek influence, the Roman gods became showier and elaborated. However, these changes did not improve the Romans religion, on the contrary, it made more corrupt (Morey, 1901). However, after conquering the Greeks, Romans were absorbed by their philosophies and wanted to learn more. The Greeks had two schools of philosophies the Stoicism and Epicureanism. Also, Romans adopted Greeks symmetrical and proportional architectural style and combined it with the Etruscan’s arch. For instance, the Circus Maximus, the Colosseums, and Parthenon are Roman’s structures styles that were copy and slightly modify to their taste and style.
It’s hard to think that Rome could be interested in art, when many times they were involved in wars and in gladiators’ shows. I dare to imply that is all about people and how they used their resources to improve and excel in multiple areas.
