Why Did Rome Become A Powerful Empire
By: Geneva Frank Rome was first established according to legend by two twins with the names of Romulus and Remus. According to legend, they were thrown in the Tiber river to drown. There uncle was fearful of what they would become. A mother wolf found them and took them in as her own. When they were older they came across what was going to be called Rome. Romulus killed Remus so that he could be, what they called an emperor later on, the first king of Rome. Rome’s geography played a key role in it becoming a huge and powerful empire. Mountain ranges in the north kept the Huns and other invaders from coming into the empire. If your house was on a hill, it was less apt to get robbed and you were much safer. The Mediterranean Sea was the center for commerce and trade. Trade was a key part in how Rome became a dominant and powerful empire. Wealth brought power and influence. A monarchy is a governmental system in which the head of state is a single person. The first ruler of Rome and the founder of Rome is Romulus. During this time period Rome’s power was passed down by blood. This is one of the reasons why monarchies fell. He took power in 27 B.C. After this he went by the title Augustus, and during his reign what used to be the roman republic, turned into a empire. It turned into an empire by having a pax romana. Pax romana means roman peace. Taking power away from the senate, having a strong army, and being lead by a brilliant leader all lead to the pax romana which led to an empire. The empire was similar to the republic by the fact that all citizens had a voice in what was done. But its also different by the fact that in the republic the ssenate had a big say in what was done, but in the empire the senate’s say didn’t have as much as affect as it did in the
