The military might of Rome and Carthage had many differences as well. In considering the Roman Republic, I noted that Rome was largely considered to have a military that was based on land. In addition, the Roman army was largely comprised of volunteers who were citizens that were trained to fight in a well integrated manner. This was the state of affairs before the Punic Wars begun. In considering Carthage, I noted that despite the fact that Carthage was a mercantile power, it was necessary for it to have a navy that was powerful. However, the ships were considered the standard of the world during that time. The military System of Carthage was indeed well balanced in as far as its navy was concerned. For its navy was considered the greatest at that time. In addition, the army of Carthage was considered to comprise mostly of mercenaries.
