Around the time that the Revolution started Russia was a provisional government lead by Tsar Nicholas II. The country was poverty stricken and devastated by the massacre that happened in 1905, which he did nothing to help the people that needed help. Trotsky was the leader the Red Army and was very big in turning Marx’s theory into action during and after the revolution. His counterpart in Animal Farm is Snowball. Snowball does basically the same stuff that Trotsky did. He participated in numerous revellings acts and was the leader of the Animal Farm army. Trotsky was killed by Joseph Stalin's agents. In the book, Snowball is not killed but he is chased off the farm by Napoleon. Joseph Stalin did not really care about the political part of being a leader. He was a power hungry type of leader that did as he pleased simply because he could. Stalin took over the communist party by committing acts of terror that were done by his secret police called the KGB. Napoleon represents Joseph Stalin in the book. He loved the power and that is all he wanted, just like Stalin. One of Stalin's main way to gain power was through propaganda. Propaganda is represented in the novel by Squealer. Squealer’s plan to build the windmill is the perfect representation of Stalin’s Five Year Plan. He is an example of the common working man that his propaganda was supposed to create a picture of. So in simple terms, Stalin wanted everyone to think that communism was great, he used a bandwagon propaganda strategy to show that if everyone thinks it is great so there is no reason to question or overthrow him.
