North American Territory The United Kingdom gradually became interested in the North American territory through a series of events. First was their use of privateers to private Spanish merchant ships. Being an island country, the United Kingdom also happened to have the most heavily populated empire in the Old world. It’s so populated they began sending people over from the United Kingdom to the New world to reduce the population in their country. This lead to more and more colonists and ultimately acquiring more territory. The French and Indian war was the first conflict between major Old world powers ever brought to the Americas. It was the war that lead the United Kingdom to the full-scale colonization of North America. The United Kingdom won the war which removed France from the competitors opening up more land to the English settlers.
Privateers allowed the United Kingdom to plunder boats full of Spanish gold. English piracy was an important factor that lead up to the formation of the Spanish Armada. At its largest the Spanish Armada was the largest fleet of warships in all of Europe. However, when they attacked the English privateers fleet, they lost due to bad weather and poor tactics. Privateers shaped almost all the colonization efforts in North America prior to the 17th century. The privateers were so important that Queen Elizabeth paid Sir Walter Raleigh to make a settlement at Roanoke that privateers could use as a base of operations to repair their ships, and plan raids on Spanish shipments.
