Ignorance is the root cause of racial discrimination against minority groups. By reaching out to them, you are finding out what qualities each individual has. The Cambridge Community Television states it perfectly: …show more content…
However, the truth is that racism exists all around us and is in the roots of our society. Racial assaults aside, minority groups aren’t treated equally as white people. There are many examples of this as stated by Craig Katherine, “You’re six times more likely to get stopped by the police if you’re black. Unemployment rates are twice as high for ethnic minorities than for white people. Black and minority ethnic (BAME) people are more likely to suffer from mental health problems and experience discrimination in accessing mental health crisis care.”(Craig 1). This shows that in today’s society racism is still an issue and not everybody is completely equal yet. The process for complete racial equality is a long one, but it begins with acknowledgement. Like Craig Katherine states, “Any white person who is serious about racial equality has to be anti-racist. This requires us to actively acknowledge our privilege, because that privilege – even though we never asked for it – is the very cause of the inequity suffered by others.”(Craig 1), the privileges of white people come at the expense of others. If the problem of racism isn’t acknowledged, it will never be solved. In order to solve a problem, it must be recognized; therefore, people must acknowledge their privileges, and reach out towards minority groups to tackle the problems of racism
