In this scene Shakespeare presents the relationship between Romeo and Juliet as a tragedy. I can tell this because it says ‘I must be gone and live’. This shows that Romeo knows he might die if he stays but he is choosing to stay to see Juliet. It also shows how much they love each other as Romeo is showing he would die for Juliet. By using the image of death, it shows that the story might become a tragedy. By including hints towards a tragedy, it keeps the audience interested. It also shows how bitter the feud is between the two families.
Shakespeare also presents the tragedy as very passionate; their love is very strong. Romeo says ‘stay and die’. This clearly shows that Romeo knows he might die if he stays however he still
stays. This shows their love is strong, as he is risking his life for Juliet. This would shock an Elizabethan audience as marriages in that era were rarely about love. They were often used to help both families secure their social status.
Shakespeare uses iambic pentameter to show how the characters are pleased to be in each other company and that they aren’t awkward around each other. The use of the rhythm is almost like a heartbeat. This could show how they are excited to be around each other; they can feel their hearts pounding. The use of iambic pentameter also could have been deliberately used to make it easier for the actors to remember. Shakespeare was an actor as well so he would want to make it easier for the actors to remember the long speeches. Using iambic pentameter also helps with the pace of the acting. Actors are far less likely to forget their lines if they have got a steady rhythm. This would show that Shakespeare was thinking of his actors when he wrote his plays.
Lastly Shakespeare uses negative imagery to hint at a tragedy. The repetition of the word death creates suspense and tension. This would useful be useful at attracting an audience. Doing this would also show how bitter the family feud is. The fight scene is very much visual based compared to some of the description. So making Romeo and Juliet rushed and stressed would show how deep the feud is.
