What impacts has conflict had on Afghanistan?
The Afghanistan war began in 2001 after the intervention of the U.S into the Afghanistan civil war after the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center. The Afghan Civil War began before that in 1992 but the full intervention of the Western World and its allies began only after the terrorist attack on the U.S. Many things in Afghanistan were impacted due to the conflict taking place in Afghanistan such as the economy, health and literacy rate. In addition to these important things such as infrastructure, health and education are also being affected due to this dreadful war.
Firstly, one of the most important impacts of conflict in Afghanistan is the economy. Within the economy, minor things such as HDI (Human Development Index), GDP (Gross Domestic Product) and the GDP per capita are also being affected. The NHDR (National Human Development Report) ranks Afghanistan as the fifth poorest country at position 174 out of 178. Afghanistan isn’t doing very well anyway and the war, which eats up a lot of Afghanistan’s supplies, is reducing the rate of development in Afghanistan as well. In 2006, Afghanistan’s GDP was $6.7 billion. In the GDP rankings (which are measured in US Dollars) Afghanistan is ranked at position 114 whereas the U.S is at 1st place. If the situation and the war continues, Afghanistan’s GDP will lower as more people will be forced to work for the military or be out of jobs because of the great need of military supplies. Also, since there is a civil war in Afghanistan, there are no countries to be conquered to get money and supply from, the whole war is taking place within itself.
Afghanistan has plans to meet economic challenges and revive its deprived economy, but the civil war keeps tearing down the economic structure. More and more money is used for military supplies cutting off or weakening trade links with many countries. This in turn
