How Is Atticus Finch A Hero
American writer Joseph Campbell once stated “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself”. The writer was implying that any person can become a hero easily when dedicated their lives to an idea they believe is bigger than them, yet this trait can only go so far. In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, by the author Harper Lee, Atticus is the father of the protagonist and is seen as a hero to many readers. Atticus Finch resides in 1930s Maycomb, Alabama while taking work as a lawyer as well as being a well respected, intelligent man. Atticus is seen as a great man by many up until he has taken the role of being the lawyer of an African-American male, Tom Robinson, accused of rape ; however, the new disgust of
the people in Maycomb does not Finch’s conscience of helping the man he felt was wrongly convicted, standing up for something he believed in. Thirty years later in the real world, Malcolm X, a man who became a widely known leader in the Civil Rights movement rose above those in order to end segregation and racial inequality. During the late 1950s and early 1960s, Malcolm X dedicated his life towards making certain that the lives of blacks became easier while non segregation and racial equality became brought up all over the U.S. Although living in two different points of time and changing different parts of the country, Atticus Finch and Malcolm X were both men who felt that their needed to be change in the environments that they were around. Heroes are seen all over as people who make amazing acts of courage, often thinking of others rather than themselves while acting on the strong passion of their beliefs. Two crucial qualities that are necessary for someone to be considered a hero are being passionate and selfless. Having passion for what the person believes in is a quality that is necessary to be considered a hero.
