The 31 year old baseball player had 30 home runs, driven in 100 runs, scored 100 runs, and batted .300 for eleven straight years. These stats are great, but our question became can they continue? We had to keep in mind averages and norms for professional baseball players. The…
The book that I am reading is Baseball Great by Tim Green. The book is about a kid named Josh who is very good at baseball. He is so good his dad has him make the U14 traveling baseball team( Josh is only 12 years old).the book starts to get interesting when Josh gets hooked up in gym candy (steroids). Josh's best friend Benji and Jaden help him solve the mystery.…
Some people are born with natural god given skills and ability while others who are not that lucky and have to work twice as hard just to get the same result. And then there are those rare individual who even though they are born with the talent, they still work just as hard and sometimes even harder to keep improving. It is called determination and that is a trait that all the great athletes share and it is what separates the great ones from the just good ones. This is perfect way to describe Peyton Williams Manning, who is considered to be one of the most prolific passers in NFL history.…
Many people want to believe they are the best and if they aren’t they should just give up. Derek Jeter once said “ there may be people who have more talent than you, but there’s no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do - and I believe that.” This quote is known as one of the most inspirational quotes for athletes. Jeter’s quote has been applied to the lives of many athletes, especially Jessica Long, Babe Ruth, and himself. . It has affected those individuals in different ways and taught them different things. Each athlete has had a rough patch or difficulty in their sport(s) but they knew that they had to work at it instead of just giving up. That is what made these three good athletes.…
DO you have the skills it takes to play the game. CAN you hit a 98 mph fastball coming towards you or caught a line drive on a diving caught on the dime. Believe me more thought and talent is put into the game then you think. Baseball players put hours and hours of practice into the game. So practice and you won’t believe how much you’ve grown.…
While watching the movie I started to notice many things about the personality Ty Cobb that he didn’t embody any of the things that make an athlete great. Most people would consider a great athlete as someone who…
During the Great Depression, when America was in crisis, a young baseball player Babe Ruth caught the American people's attention. The morale of the American people was down. In 1929, the stock market crashed. Between 1930-1933, forty percent of the nation's banks failed. Eventually, 8.02 million American people were unemployed. Shanty towns and shop kitchens became common sights. The american people needed a distraction from daily life and one baseball player was that. Babe Ruth was an inspiration to the american people during the Great Depression.…
As a child Babe Ruth would always be practicing baseball. Whenever he could, Babe Ruth would go outside everyday when he could to practice and get better at baseball. When he felt like he needed to get better or because someone told him he couldn't do it he always wanted to prove them wrong so he worked to change what they thought (Hampton). Babe Ruth has an awesome quote that really represents his hard work. In Babe Ruth’s quote he says, “It's hard to beat a person who never gives up” ("Babe Ruth"). This quote represents his hard work because he really did believe in this quote because he never did give up, he just kept on working until he got it right. He worked really hard throughout his life to accomplish his many achievements and goals that he was successful in. Babe Ruth is the only baseball player since the turn of the 20th century to lead his league in Triple Crown categories as both a hitter and a pitcher and he did it in the span of only three years ("99 Cool Facts"). All of these statements comes to show that Babe Ruth was always hard working no matter what he was…
LeBron James is a prime example of being physically gifted. But, even though he is gifted it does not mean he did not have to put in work to get to the level he is at today. The same goes for all of sport’s greatest players. Now days young kids believe they can survive with just their skill set alone. We see thousands of these athletes unable to translate their youthful success to the professional level. Your personal attributes can help beat your competition but it is your work ethic that can put you over the top. It divides the exclusive from the rest of the pack.…
Have you ever wondered why baseball became a sport? The wonderful experience about baseball is that it is in a enjoyable environment. Baseball players experience the marvelous outdoors. In a sport, every position is important and needed in order for the whole team to succeed. Although all positions are crucial, a pitcher may be the most important in baseball. In terms of skills and abilities, the pitcher would be the toughest position to do without on any given day. A strong outfielder could throw the ball over the plate at a high velocity, but that solution wouldn’t last long. Pitchers have the greatest influence on the outcome of the game, often pitching six or seven innings. A strong pitcher will have an outstanding pitching velocity, meaning at least 90 mph since that’s the current cutoff. Another important quality to have is consistency, it isn’t enough to pitch 90 mph once, as well as watching and studying the hitter. Velocity is a great thing, knowing your hitter is good, and consistency is even better, but add command/control to these and you’d have the perfect pitcher. Having these four traits will only make you become better and better. Clayton Kershaw, David Price, Jake Arrieta, and Zack Greinke are the top four players with these qualities and have made it far in their careers.…
Yeah people might think I’m good at baseball but nobody knows what I had to go through to get where I am today. It took me sometime to realize baseball was more than just a hobby and I'm glad I did. Without the change I wouldn't be the same athlete I am today. Today I look back on myself as the same athlete I am today even though I take baseball more seriously it's still a game it's just played differently and takes a whole lot more to continue on and play at the next level. Baseball is more than a passion, it's a…
I entered high school with a chip on my shoulder, bitter from being the smallest and being disregarded by my classmates. This perceived injustice drove me to work extremely hard. Night after night, I would be in the basement working on my swing, wanting to prove my worth to everyone. After months of practicing, my softball skills were starting to progress, and I was finally starting to grow. I then began to experience success on the softball field as well.…
“Less than or about 10.5% of NCAA baseball seniors will get drafted, and out of those players only a few will become great” (Hume). “One thing that Derek Jeter, Hank Aaron, and Babe Ruth all possess is the drive and the will to become a great baseball player” (Hume). “When the coaches of these players saw how they handle themselves on and off the field, it shows that they have the characteristics of becoming a great baseball player” (Hume). “MLB recruiters are looking for someone who not only excels in the big things, but also on the little details. (Hume). “Becoming a pro takes great responsibility and it is very hard to become great, but if you have the will and the mind you can become great” (Hume). In the history of baseball there are three…
Hard labor gives us a sense of satisfaction. We give ourselves a goal, work hard to reach that goal, and once the goal is reached we can reap the benefits of it. In the fall of my junior year, I was put on the Junior varsity baseball team. This is not uncommon for players but I was unsatisfied with my spot and made it a goal to play on the varsity team when the spring season began. During the off season I put in many hours of hard labor to try to reach my goal. I went to work outs with the team and also individual catching lessons. In the spring after tryouts were finished, not only had I made the varsity team, but was also on the starting roster.…
