In All the Pretty Horses, McCarthy uses the theme of journeys to relay the message that life is not only a physical journey, but there are emotional journeys through life also.…
During my junior year in high school I visited the oncology area at St. Christopher's hospital for children with the Quilt for Kids a nonprofit organization dedicated to brightening the lives of children who suffer from abuse or life threatening illnesses. Oncology is the study and treatment of tumors such as cancer. The volunteers made quilts for the kids for support and comfort during their recovery. I made two-horse stuffed animals instead of a quilt, I wanted them to hold on to something while they went to a difficult process. I made a chestnut-brown horse color, with hazel eyes, and light-colored hair. The other horse was a dun horse with tannish tint, with brown eyes and dark long hair. This experience had an emotional impact on me it…
During my younger years, I developed a large interest in horses or more particularly the sport of ranch sorting. Around the age of seven I got my very first sorting horse, whose name was Skipper. Skipper was colored like the planet Mars. He was not the best horse for this sport, but he helped develop my skills. I started competing at the Vassar Arena every…
After the exciting wait of finally getting my first car at the age of 16, I faced one major problem: no money. Searching for an answer, I gradually learned that getting my first job taught me many valuable life lessons and helped me evolve into the person I am today. After almost 4 years of work experience ranging in many different fields, I have adapted new skills and abilities, as well as the value of money. With challenges being faced, the forced me to manage my time, money, and effort in an organized way. This changed my direction, and motives, in life as well as my whole perspective on what is important and what really matters.…
The right to physician-assisted suicide is a very controversial topic that concerns many people all over the world. There has been much debate about whether a terminally ill patient has the right to die with the assistance of a physician. Physician-assisted suicide is defined as a physician providing a patient with means to kill themselves. The doctor would prescribe a lethal dose of medication to the patient to end their life. From the Utilitarian standpoint, physician-assisted suicide is morally acceptable because the patients should be allowed to end there suffering, reduce the damaging financial…
“I can see in them an expression of my own restless spirit,” said Katie in Flicka. On October 30, 2016, I got my horse Jozi. She is an American Quarter Horse and stands at about 15 hands. Her color to me is absolutely beautiful. Jozi is a red roan dun. Her summer coat gets white with dashes of orange tinted brown throughout her body. Front face, ears, legs, tail and mane remain a brown with orange shine. With some stripes similar to zebra stripes in dark brown that transition to a reddish brown. In the winter, she looks a lot like a deer. The natural orange tinted brown shows through with no white in sight.…
When I was younger, I typically received the things I wanted, things such as toys – being that I was an only child – and never worried about hearing the answer, “No”. I had this insane idea that the world revolved around me. Although I still had the concept in my head, that it was all about me when I was informed I would be an older sister, I knew that nothing would be the same. Before I was a sister, I never took anyone else into consideration, and I was never told to do otherwise. I was around four years old, when this news has changed my life forever.…
Due to my medical history, any child that my parents had after me had a much higher risk of having the same birth defect. My parents began taking all preventive measures possible so that this child would not experience the same difficulties I had. In July of that year, my little sister was born in Walnut Creek, California. I was immediately infatuated and loved spending as much time I could with her. Thankfully, she was not born with Spina Bifida to the great joy of my…
When I was thirteen years old, my mind was on frogs—dead frogs, to be specific. The only criteria that a frog had to meet in order to even slightly seize my interest was that it had to be dead. Several summer days were filled with me scouring the inside my pool’s filter, desperately searching for unfortunate souls that had met a watery end. Any specimens found would be placed under the knife of my beginner’s-level dissection kit. I took this fascination as a sign that a career in pathology was in my future. However, one fateful operation led me on a new path, one geared toward aiding the creation of one of life’s most precious experiences—motherhood.…
Horseback riding has yet to become a popular sport for Chinese Americans and I very rarely meet other Asians at the barn. Most riders are quite wealthy but I've integrated myself into this world even though I come from a different background. Equestrianism taught me that being different can be an advantage, and it taught me to be open-minded —allowing me to connect with and embrace a new culture. It is unfamiliar to my family and friends so I am often on my own for this sport. But I am proud of the independence it has given me and the lessons it has taught me: perseverance, patience, forgiveness, and strength physically and mentally.…
There were a hundred painted shapes on the ground. We looked at eachother in doubt. “How is this ever going to fit together?”said Maddie. “I have no idea”.…
My grandfather was an acumen with horses in addition, he spent his long life professionally racing and training harness horses. I am humble to say he’s in the Harness Horse Hall of Fame. I truly believe I was blessed with the horsemanship he once had and I’m determined to live up to his talents and success. I was always drawn to horses at a young age. However, I didn’t start working with horses until I was 8 years old. Horses were so effortless to me, whether it’s on the back of a thousand plus pound animal with a mind of it’s own or evaluating a stifle problem a horse may have. Healing injuries a horse develops and making the horse feel better, gives me the most pleasure out of life. Evaluating and solving a problem to a horse's sound issue isn't just a science it’s an art form that many don’t have the patience to master.…
One of the service learning projects I have participated in is taking part in the 2015 Special Olympics. After lending a helping hand, passing out food to the athletes and seeing them perform I was very impressed. I learned that even though those people had disabilities, they were no different from us. They did not want to be treated differently because of their impairments; they wanted to be treated equal and I respected that. After bonding with an athlete named Brianna, she made me cry. Her mother told me how she was born a preemie, also she is autistic. She has difficulty walking because her legs were underdeveloped when she was born. I bonded with her because I was also a preemie but she still wanted to talk to me and be my friend. Even…
Horses changed my life and my loving for animals. Horses are magnificent animals on four legs. They can be raced, jumped, used to pull wagons, etc. Horses can be companions and can be your next best friend.…
Ever since I was little, I knew that I wanted go horseback riding—and I knew it is something i want to pursue in the long run. When I first fell off a horse, I was only about 6 years old. Everyone freaked out and came running towards me, but I stood up and got right back on the horse like nothing had happened. Everyone was shocked how I didn’t sit on the floor and burst into tears like any other six year-old. When I first chose to go horseback riding, I knew that even if you fall off, you…
