In the Army there are different roles played by the enlisted, the Non-commissioned Officers, and the Officers when it comes to Human Resources. The Human Resources Sergeant is the one who performs these routine or specialized duties and handles the leadership development of junior NCO’s. To understand the role of the Human Resources Sergeant in the Profession of Arms we must look at what it means to be a profession, the Army’s professional culture, and our balancing role as leaders. According to “The Profession of Arms” article, a profession “produces uniquely expert work, not routine or repetitive work”. It is a vocation that requires extensive study, skill, and training to provide a service to society. One primary area is balancing our four fields of expertise with our current operation and developing those areas for future operations. The Army as a whole has its own area of expertise and in Human Resources we have our four core competencies which are to man the force, provide HR Services, coordinate personnel support, and to conduct HR planning and operations. We must develop strategies of implementing these core competencies into current operations and also develop procedures for future operations. In conclusion, the significance of our duties as a human resources sergeant in this profession of arms is key due to the nature of our responsibilities. Our craft compels us to always be trained, educated, and skilled in what we do as a profession. The Army’s culture and beliefs keep us credible and trustworthy.
