How important is the role of the Human Resources Sergeant in the Profession of Arms? In the following paragraphs I will discuss what a profession is, what it means to be a professional, what it is to be a human resource specialist, and the Human Resource Sergeant's role in the Army Profession.
To understand the role of the Human Resources Sergeant in the Profession of Arms, we first need to understand, 'what it means to be a profession?' and 'what is a professional?’. A Profession as described in, “Profession of arms”, is a career that produces unique expert work that focuses on effectiveness rather than efficiency. So, to be a professional is to realize, grasp, and effectively practice the skillfulness of the profession. In other words, know your job, understand how to do it, and use that knowledge in an effective manner. All of this cannot happen overnight. It can take years to become a professional, but that is why the Army has a rank system in place. As you advance each rank, you deepen your understanding of your career and certifies you on the knowledge you have obtained. In other words, we start as apprentice and work our way up the ladder to become more proficient in our daily career, striving to become a professional. A Human Resource Sergeant is a support career that helps Soldiers develop their Army career. Human resource specialist also provides personnel support and assistance to all divisions of the Army. In my opinion, Human Resource Sergeant is 'jack of all trades' career. What I mean by that is, Human Resource Sergeant does it all from Personnel Readiness Management to Postal Operations and more. Human Resources support is broken down into four core competencies, which are as
