17. Office for people with developmental disabilities
18. Office of Mental Health
19. Human Rights First
20. Salvation Army

The Two agencies I have chosen to discuss is Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) and Safe Horizon.

OPWDD offers services to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. This organization was created because at one point people with all types of disabilities whether it was physical, mental, psychiatric were placed into an institution called Willowbrook. Willowbrook was created to give those with mental retardation a place to live. In this institution the individuals who were housed there did not get proper treatment. The conditions were unsanitary and the facility was overcrowded. Some people who were living in this facility should not have even been there because they were not retarded; they may have had something like cerebral palsy which is a disability but not retardation. People brought their family members there because it was referred to them by doctors, because they may have been embarrassed to have a disabled child, or because they didn’t know how to care for them. I think it is very important especially if you want to improve the services that are being provided to the clients, no organization wants to have a loss, and every organization wants to have growth, especially when it deals with health sector. So having a proper financial management for the human service organization would give it an edge over other organization in Quality of Service and Net growth per year. Which I think that many HR people are not financially aware and this impacts their decisions, but by then having this knowledge it will give them a competitive advantage.…

Families entrusted Willowbrook to do the right thing. Families were promised education, proper treatment, and essentially a better life for those who were intellectually disabled. The conditions and reality within Willowbrook were anything but that. The individuals were treated with cruelty, negligence and a lack of compassion. With the overwhelming amount of patients, government cuts were made, creating an even worse environment. Many patients became sick, conditions worsen and some even died.…

I really enjoyed participating and learning about America’s dynamic political policies. This class was very useful and I have used the social, cultural, political, governmental and economic prism method to dissect numerous policy topics for other classes. The format encouraged class discussion and it was engaging to hear what other students thought on hot topic issues. I also believe this course taught me how to have more meaningful political conversations by learning how to refrain from personal political ideology and rhetoric.…
