The process of preparing to go duck hunting is quite tedious. A hunter must pack thoroughly, not just the average cooking utensils but also: duck calls, blinds, seats, clothes, food, a trailer, decoys, guns, and much more. I usually prepare for North Dakota a week early, because I feel so excited, which gives me more time to become prepared. Usually I go with my dad and my sister, but the year I am going on the “man” trip with my dad and uncle. It will be more fun in my eyes, because I am with more experienced hunters, and that makes the trip easier. People might be wondering why I need all these decoys and duck calls. They are quick to learn once I tell them.…

One of the methods were breathing holes. Inuits waited till the seals came up to breathe in the breathing hole and used probes which are long bone tools to kill it. They also used indicators that are made out of feathers and bones called idlak. They would stick the indicator in the breathing holes and the indicator would vibrate when the seal comes and they would kill it. Another method was when the seals come onto the ice the Inuits would follow the seals quietly and carefully and they would act like seals to fit in while hunting. They would also hunt other animals like whales. They would shoot the whales with a poison dart and wait for it to die and wash up on shore. Inuits also killed foxes and bears. They used stone traps to trap the animal and dogs were sometimes used to surround the bears until the hunters came. Birds were hunted by shooting spears into the flock. Inuits would catch fish by using a spear called leister and they also used rocks to block the stream so the fishes come towards the hunter. These were different type of ways the Inuit…

Not only is hunting an exhilarating experience but so is the feeling of being surrounded by wilderness. During winter times since I was 12 years old, my father would take me out on long drives in the middle of winter to hunting sites just outside of Edmonton. What made the drive not seem so long was the scenic route we would always take. Every once in a while I would see little white rabbits hopping around and leaving miniature footprints all in the snow next to the road. Further down the road we would pass a fairly big hill that had two pine trees at the top of it. I always wondered how long they had been there considering the fact that they were over thirty feet high. Finally we would get to the hunting ground and make are way down to a little patch of brush where we would crouch and wait for the deer to pass by. The feeling of the cold snow crunching under my boots, the frost covered branches of the bush we were nestled under, and all the little footprints that surrounded us gave me a feeling of unity with nature. After hiding in our spots for a long while, usually until my feet and toes were completely frozen it seemed, my father would whisper “Here comes one right now”. A few moments later I’d hear a loud bang and we’d be back on the road with our trophy and bragging rights. We have carried on this tradition every…
