“At least 56 people in the U.S. were killed and another 67 in the Caribbean. Cost estimates have ranged as high as $60 billion so far. More than 4 million people remain without power, as crews from across the country converge on the Northeast to restore electricity.” (The Atlantic; In Focus with Alan Taylor.) Many people may be asking, what is this horrible thing that happened to the East coast? But unfortunately thousands of people are living this tragedy today. It’s where my father grew up and where his father grew up too. Now you can’t even recognize it. The shore is kind of like an inheritance passed down from generation to generation for everyone who wants to be a part of it. It’s a place where people are supposed to create tons of memories with their families and friends and its supposed to go on forever.
To many people, the Jersey Shore is just a vacation spot or a place to trash talk Snooki and The Situation. But what people don’t realize that the Jersey Shore is home for thousands of people. And many of the people that live there lost their homes. Their homes just washed away or got demolished over night. Just take a second and imagine one morning waking up and you don’t have your home anymore. You don’t have the place where you grew up, the place where you were brought home from the hospital, the place that is a part of you. It might be crazy to think about, but it is happening today.
