It begins by Malala talking about the Taliban first coming to her valley when she was 10, and the changes that they forced upon her community. She talks about the Taliban leader, Maulana Fazlullah, a 28-year-old, who was from the Swat River, who had taken up the role after the initial leader Sufi Mohammed was imprisoned. Fazlullah had set up an illegal radio station to get information out about reforming Islam and the way that it should be practiced. He first began by spreading a positive message and encouraging people to follow the Quran and give up bad practices like smoking and using heroin. His message soon after changed and became very negative, and he began creating many rules like watching movies and listening to CDS was bad. He also began telling people he had a better understanding of God and knew why things were happening like the causes of earthquakes that killed hundreds of people was because of their sins. Fazullah’s strategy to gain power was feed off of people’s fear and vulnerability to convince them to do things that they wouldn’t agree to before. After he and his followers gained power they started acting like the criminals they used to target by kidnapping and stealing. Fazlullah also began to harshly target women …show more content…

There’s a baby girl in the audience and picks her up saying to everyone “This girl is our future. In Out of the Shadows, most of the white people in Zimbabwe are oblivious to the hardships that the native Africans go through. However, Robert finds out how the African children are treated by whites when he visits a village full of injured kids. “‘They’re not games, they’re barbaric, the things we’ve done. Cruel.’” (Wallace 233). After realizing how bad he and other whites treat the children, he breaks away from the traditional value of stomping over black people and acting like they are lesser people. This changes his thinking from feeling like they are good for nothing, to realizing how oppressed they are. In I am Malala, Malala values going to school very much, as it is uncommon for a girl to go to school and learn instead of taking care of her family. The Taliban, a large terrorist group that takes over the area, says girls cannot go to school, but she ignores them. “‘They can stop us going to school, but they can’t stop us learning.’” (Yousafzai 161) Malala shows that she doesn’t want to follow the traditional values of her Muslim, male-dominated culture. Her thinking changes to wanting to go to school as a girl more than anything else. Breaking away from traditional cultural values changes your thinking. Your daily decisions, actions, and your entire way of life can also change because of this new…

Being a young, teenage girl in Swat Valley, Pakistan, Malala enjoyed going to school, but the safety and availability of schooling was facing a dearth once the Taliban merged in and began terrorizing schools. One day on the way to school and being held hostage by the Taliban, Malala recollects in her interview that she stood and confidently stated, “Then I would tell him [Talib] how important education is and I even want education for his children as well and I will tell him that’s what I wanted to tell you, now do what you want” (Stewart n.p.). Malala’s love and passion from school extended so far as going into confrontation with the Taliban and risking her life just to ensure and declare her rights and the rights of her fellow, female classmates to education and schooling. Malala’s efforts in expressing feminism and ensuring equal rights for girls in Swat Valley and all over the planet expanded to a point of global attention and international charities and foundations. Malala tells of the history between Pakistan and Afghanistan and how the Russian invasion transformed General Zi from an international pariah to a great defender of freedom in the Cold War. She describes how Pakistan became a friend of the United States, whose biggest enemy at that time was Russia, as well as an ally of other Muslim nations, who viewed the Russian invasion as a war against Islam. She also talks about how money poured in from all over the Muslim world, particularly Saudi Arabia, which matched whatever the US sent, and volunteer fighters too, including a Saudi millionaire called Osama Bin Laden. Malala goes on to tell how Pakistan children were given math textbooks (written by an American University) which used war tactics to teach math. She says that local mosques held sermons supporting jihad, telling people it was their duty as Muslims to fight. She tells the story of how Malala’s father almost became a jihad. She tells how young men were recruited to fight against the Russians. They were told that becoming a jihad was their best option, as life in Pashtun was hard with little opportunity other than working in the coal mines. Malala’s father recalls thinking that death and heaven sounded like a better offer than such a hard life, so he began to embrace this path, studying and interpreting the Quran and the ways of jihad. Looking back he tells Malala that it was a kind of brainwashing. He goes on to tell her that he may have become a suicide bomber if such things existed at the time.…
