I Want To Become A Primary Care Physician

From the tender age of seven, I knew I wanted to become a physician who does not see patients as a string of signs and symptoms, but view them as human beings in need of care, kindness and compassion during their time of sickness. I want to become a physician who has a strong sense of leadership, unique perspective on patients-centered care and able to provide equitable distribution of health. As I progressed through my academic career and became enticed with the field of osteopathic medicine, I knew I wanted to pursue a lifelong career as a primary care physician. The unique field of primary care medicine is the only discipline which will enable me to execute my vision for the type of physician that I want to become. Among the various reasons why I want to become PCP, most important ones being how scrupulously it embodies the principles of osteopathic medicine. Osteopathic medicine employs the whole body concept which allows physicians to view the body and person as a preventive agent rather than zooming in on the details of specific diseases. Osteopathic primary care physicians see patients as more than CPT and DX codes on a piece of paper, but see patients as a unity of mind, body and spirit. Aforementioned allow the physicians to view the patient as a human, which exposes the physician to all the good and bad sides of the patient’s characters and personality traits. Thus, it allows the physician to gain a unique perspective on the patient’s life in regards to physical, social and mental states.
