It’s shown in the beginning of the short story and also in my first person retelling that her mind is stuck in the attic with the stuck feeling of boredom because it is demanded of her to do nothing as a women. Katherina has no control of her life in the house because the men in her life have captivity over her. Aizlewood states, “The boredom of Katerina’s existence is directly linked to the space in which she is confined” (415). The space she is confined to is the locked house and mainly the attic. Katerina is living a restricted life while she suffocates in her thoughts and the best thing she can do is move room to room with this feeling of boredom. This is due to the patriarchal element of the house. The house is ruled by men that have control of everything and because Katerina is a female she has no say or control. Aizlewood states, “The house as an imprisoning space is primarily associated with the patriarchal and socio-economic order” (412). This is followed by how it is the wealthy house of her father-in-law who is a man. I decided to incorporate in my retelling as well that because Katerina is living in a patriarchal house that is ruled by men that she can’t do anything and the norm for that time is for her to sit and do nothing which will result in her being bored over time and the feeling of being stuck will gradually
