Ignored History
What historical events have been ignored in the national history of the United States? While doing some research on this topic, I noticed that there are plenty of historical events that are ignored in the United States. I’m sure there are topics not only ignored, but hidden from Americans as well. Although it is not right, there are several reason behind the government hiding certain events from us. The biggest reason could be for our safety. For this reasoning, I’ll refer to an old saying “ignorance is bliss”, which may or may not always be true. Regardless, there are hundreds of historical events that we don’t even learn about in school! The historical event that caught my eye was titled “Why was the biggest protest in world history ignored?” Needless to say, that was the topic I looked further into. After reading the article, I noted that this whole protest was centered around one single message: No to the Iraq war. Human involvement ranged from ten to fifteen million people all around the world! This may not be a historical event only in the United States but it certainly had our involvement. About two-hundred-thousand Americans rallied in San Francisco and New York City on February 15, 2003. In addition to the Americans, about three million people flooded the streets of Rome and more than one million massed in Barcelona and London! These people joined together to march in over six-hundred cities! About ten days earlier, the secretary of state, Colin Powell, informed “what we now know was illusory intelligence about Iraq’s supposed weapons of mass destruction” (Tharoor). The crowd was slowing trying to inch to the U.N. where Colin Powell was located. The diverse group of New Yorkers varied from soccer moms to musicians. Tharoor describes the feeling on New York’s streets as “one of unity and hope”. An article in The New York Times soon was spread across America headlining “There are two superpowers: The United States and world public opinion”.
