Nursing Theory of Practice
A common goal for Advanced Practice Nurses (APN) in the healthcare setting is to work towards disease prevention and the management of chronic and acute diseases. Imogene King: Goal Attainment Theory
Healthcare deliveries often involve interpersonal relationships between people who often times are strangers. Dr. King indicates that the premise of the goal attainment theory is to mutually set goals, communicate effectively, and work together to achieve goals of treatment. The patient assessment occurs through interaction and during the assessment; the nurse collects data regarding the patient. Data may be scientifically obtained through subjective and objective information. Subjective information may be perceived by each patient differently, nonetheless remains a basis for data collection ("Theory of goal attainment," 2012).
