As they enter the building the first thing they see is the office and the lobby. They then go down the hall to begin their 7 to 8hour shift. They must review each of their patients charts to make sure the correct treatment is given. After that, they clean and set up each room with the necessary tools needed to complete the job. In some cases, x-rays will need to be taken. They then take the x-rays and leave the results for the dentist. Next, they will begin to clean the patient’s teeth, insuring they make notes for the dentist if they see anything wrong. After that part of their job is done, the dentist will come in and start his job. The dental hygienist will then come assist, if needed, or escort the patient to the front desk to make their next appointment.
During the day, they may have some patients that are hard to deal with. As I was talking to a dental hygienist, she said the hardest thing to deal with is a patient with Periodontal Disease. This is when the patient is losing their teeth. The patient can become very noncompliant and it's not easy for them to handle. She also said that she wishes to help the ones losing their teeth and be able to put a smile of their face. Even though, they have a couple difficult situations, she said that working in one place for so long is rewarding because you get to know your patients well and develop a relationship with
