The war on food production is constantly on the mind of conservationists and people who understand how our lackadaisical food choices are hurting the environment. One solution is to understand the importance of buying locally. In the text “Taking Local On the Road,” by Camille Kingsolver talks about her personal experience growing up only eating all local foods and the switch that occurs when she reaches college. Like Kingsolver, I to find it challenging to always make the best food choices because of college. The difference between being at college and home is easy access to local food and my budget. At home it is so much easier to find a farmers market and shop for organics for many reasons. It’s much easier to budget while at home because I do still live with my parents so they take care of the cost for me. Secondly, finding farmers markets back at home is as simple as walking to the nearest busy street, there you will find at least two per highway. This essay’s purpose is to discuss how much of an impact eating organic food has on an individual. Later on in the essay, Kingsolver expresses the idea that “feeling safe isn’t so easy for people my age, who face odious threats like global warming, overpopulation, and chemical warfare in our future.” My Favorite statement made by Kingsolver is “but even as the world runs out of fuel and the ice caps melt, I know the real sources of my sustenance.” Meaning even though Kingsolver lives in a world with constant threats, which she alone cannot prevent, she understands that she can take part and feel good about where her products will cause less harm to the environment and her body.
