The first rule of thumb I follow is to treat others with respect, and be courteous to others. For example, when introducing myself to others I want to look them in the eye and give a firm handshake. In walking, I always make sure to smile at others and say a polite hello. This can be a little gesture that changes a person’s day. I will continue to exercise my mind, by seeking out classes that will help me develop further, and research the newest policies and trends that affect me. For me to continually grow I must first set realistic goals, come up with a plan to meet them, and set up a timetable to meet them (Cooper, 2009). While setting goals, I should use reflective dialogue; this will help me to scratch beyond the surface to develop solid strategies. In addition, I want my goals to be realistic to lower my risk of failure. My first goal is a short-term goal, and this is to learn to listen more effectively. This is a key to my professional development because without the ability to listen, all communication may break down. I will do this by clearing any preoccupied thoughts, envision the words the speaker is saying, and take a breath before speaking to make sure the person is finished. As a nurse, I want to make sure that the full message is heard, processed, and if needed an action is completed. A long-term goal is to become a coach to new nurses on my unit. It’s important to have a coach for all new employees because it’s proven that there’s an increase in job satisfaction and retention (Cooper, 2009).
