Independent Variables In Unknown Bacteria
Experimental Procedures
Independent Variable
The independent variable is the factor that is being altered to produce a result.
There are two independent variables in this experiment which are the brand of dishwashing detergent; Palmolive, Morning Fresh and Ultra Coles Brand and the type of bacteria used which are; Micrococcus Luteus and an unknown bacteria from a sponge.
Dependent Variable
The dependent variable is the factor that is being tested which is the size of the zone of inhibition from the detergent solution and the bacteria. It will be measured in millimetres using a ruler.

Constant Variables
Constant Variables are set in place in order to produce a fair and even result across all tests conducted within the experiment.
Amount of solution of dishwashing detergent used on each test is the same.

Otherwise, one detergent will be stronger or weaker than the others meaning it will affect the rate of elimination of bacteria.
The temperature of the solution of water and detergent.
In order for all three solutions to be at the same temperature and to make sure it is not too hot to kill the bacteria and not too cold to prevent the solution from combining.
Amount of bacteria used on each agar dish.
This is to make sure that no brand of detergent is either more advantaged or disadvantaged than the other in its ability to kill the bacteria.
Amount of time each agar dish spent in incubation and the temperature of the incubator.
To ensure the bacteria has an equal chance of growing within the same timeframe.
Materials

4 beakers
3 small measuring cylinders
10 ml of Palmolive
10 ml of Ultra
10 ml of Morning

Controlled Variables: The first thing that will not change at the beginning of the experiment is the starting temperature of the liquids. Throughout the experiment the location of the liquids will stay the same. Also, the temperature of the room will stay the same. The mug that the liquids started in will not change so the results will have a more accurate reading.…

Controlled variables in the experiment include the type of beaker used (150mL max), the amount of water used for each trial (100mL), and the amount of drops of food coloring used for each trial (2 drops). These things were necessary to keep the same in the experiment because if they were changed, it would skew the data and make it inaccurate.…

Procedure: We started this lab on May 12, 2014. Using a permanent marker on the bottom of the dish, we divided it into 4 sections. We labeled the sections, W (water), A (alcohol), S (soap), and HP (hydrogen peroxide). Then, we labeled the perimeter of our dish with our initials and class period. Kyra rubbed her fingers across the surface of the table for 30 seconds (you can also use the bottom of your shoes, the door knob, etc.) Then, Christine lifted the lid off of the petri dish so that Kyra could gently rub her finger across the entire surface of agar. We were careful not to puncture the agar. Then, we replaced the lid. We wet one disc in each liquid using the forceps (shaking excess liquid off disk), and then placed the disc on the agar in the middle of the appropriate section. Soon, we closed the lid. Afterwards, we turned the agar dish into our teacher for incubation.…

In this experiment, the independent variables are the different types of beverages that will be used. The dependant variables (the variables influenced by the different beverages) is the running time (the time that the person will run in one lap), the amount of pushups done in one minute, how many sit-ups is completed by two minutes, and the number of jumping jacks that are done in thirty seconds. I believe that Gatorade will help your athletic performance the most, therefore the other drinks such as water, Arizona Tea, milk, Mott’s Apple Juice, and Coca-Cola is the control group. The controlled variables in the experiment (items that will stay the same) is…

An independent variable is a factor that is changed throughout the experiment to determine the results. In this case, the independent variable were the types of cleaner used (Palmolive, Betadine, Dettol). These were changed throughout the experiment to compare different effects of cleaners towards bacterial growth. A dependent variable is the factor in which is being measured and observed.…
