Discrimination and prejudice come in different forms, and are learned in different ways. These agents for prejudice come from culture and socialization, family, friends, school, work and the media they all play a huge role in racism. There is organization in discrimination, it comes in two forms, individual and institutional. Individual discrimination is the negative treatments and discriminations of one person by another. It is a more personal act, therefore it is in your face or more overt. The criminal justice system is another example of institutionalized discrimination, African Americans are often given longer prison sentences, arrested more often, and receive much harsher treatment in court, which I will be getting deeper into in the following paragraphs. In the articles, "Race Matters" and "The Startling Effects of Housing Discrimination in Ferguson" the sociological concept being examined is industrialized discrimination. In other words the discrimination and the race based favoritism that goes on in society and how race plays a huge role in many industries, where the policies customers are required to follow change based on your race and ethnicity. Also mentioned in the article “The Startling Effects of Housing Discrimination in Ferguson,” 98% of FHA loan recipients were white from 1934 to 1968. Another program that mainly only benefitted white people was G.I build, a program for veterans. White people in the U.S. have had privileges that black people don’t, it has been this way and still is. A lot of the time these race favored privileges go unseen because industrialized discrimination is written in fine print per-say.
