First of all, luge was first introduced in the 1964 Winter Olympics and they were held in Austria.
Then, when this event was first introduced, there was men’s, women’s, and doubles that came with it as well. In the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, the mixed team was introduced and was available to all athletes, but you must have one male and one female. Next, the country with the most gold medals for luge is Germany, they have been holding the most medals since luge has been invented and they currently have 75. Other countries that hold the most medals in luge are Austria, and Italy for relay, men’s doubles, women’s singles, and men’s
singles. Next, you must wear specific equipment in order to take place in the race. First, the sled must be aerodynamic. In order to compete in the race, you must wear a helmet, tight rubber suit, spiked gloves, and handmade boots. You need to wear a helmet because, you need to protect your head. A tight rubber suit is required because, it's warm, and it helps you move around when you want to. The spiked gloves are used when you need to stop and they help you stop when you put pressure on the ice. Handmade boots are build to help you walk better on ice, and help you run on ice for the beginning of your course and the ending of it as well. In conclusion, luge is a similar event to skeleton in many ways. The only difference is that for luge, you face upward and your feet will be first. I enjoyed watching luge and seeing the U.S men’s singles take home the silver. It can be a dangerous event, but I would want to give it a try someday. I liked learning more about luge and it was a fun experiment.
