We have about 10-20 kids with diabetes in our school but out in the world there are about 15,000. All of these kids have a pump. Some of you may be wondering what that is. Today you will know what a pump is and why kids and adults with diabetes need one. Some people may know what this is but most people don’t. For those of you who do know good for you, but for those of you who don’t that is why I am here today.
Diabetes is a condition where your pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin for your body. Insulin is something that lets your body use sugar (glucose) to help your body store insulin. The meter comes with a poker and testing strips. You use the poker on your finger and put a strip into the meter. Then after you poke your finger then you put the blood on the strip. This could either tell you that your blood sugar is high, low, or good. If it is high then you need to not eat anything sugary until it goes back down. Then if it is too low then you need to eat or drink something sugary.
Diabetes may not sound fun. You are right. You can’t eat whenever or whatever you want. You have to do carbs before you eat anything and need to make sure that if your blood sugar isn’t too high before you eat candy or drink pop. Then if your blood sugar gets to low then you could have a seizure. And if it is to high then you could possibly go into a coma. All of these things are very scary but people with diabetes have to worry about these things to make sure that it never happens to them.
There are not many good things that come with diabetes. But some of the things are that you have a higher tolerance of needles. You have a better diet. You have a medical excuse to eat cheese. You also have an escape hatch out of social situations. All of these are pros of having
