I had the privilege of interviewing Jessica Choi, an international counselor in a small private University of 150 international students called Wilshire University & Computer Training College located in Los Angeles, California. Wilshire University & Computer Training College is an international school founded in 1989 to provide high quality English language instruction to a diverse group of students to help them improve their communicative, writing and reading skills for academic, professional and personal purposes.

I personally had known Jessica for about a year and a half as I worked in the University as an office assistant for about 5 months before I came to Azusa Pacific University. I have not talked to her after leaving the job; I was

She feels that the fact that she was an international student herself helped her to connect with the international students at a personal level. She said it was easier to relate to the struggles and hardships that these international students go through. She talked about the amount of money these students use in order for them to come to United States to study for certain amount of time. She said she feels obligated to make sure that students really get the learning done to maximize the time they are in United States. She shared how important it is to have passion for these students. She said not all students are here because they are rich. Some students have saved up their money for years so that they can study in United States for short amount of time. She said it is important to have an understanding mind to try to see things from their eyes. She also highlighted that patience is an important virtue in this career as a main person communicating with students who don’t speak English as their first language. She shared how there are times where it is extremely difficult to understand what the students are trying to say because of the heavy accent. She said that there are times she wants to ask the students to leave because she can’t understand a single word that is coming out of the mouth of the student but she said it …show more content…
She stated that it is helpful for you to be a good listener. She shared times when she had difficult time understanding someone on the phone and on-line. She said the international counselor needs to have patient when dealing with students because there will be times when the language barrier will frustrate you. She also encouraged me to know what is right and wrong. I asked her what it meant. She gave me an example; she shared how there are students who will try to be friendly in a way that seems very conditional. She talked about how there was a case where a student did not pay the tuition on time was put on terminated list, the student asked Jessica if she can delay the date. She said she still needed to follow the rules even though she had personal relationship with the students. She said it is always hard but it is required to have a sense of what is right and

I met with Sofia Mitre. Sofia is a Mexican expatriate. She has lived in the U.S. for the vast majority of her life; however, she constantly travels to and from Mexico to visit family and to accompany her father on business trips. Although we both grew up in Austin, Sofia considers herself a visitor to the U.S. as a citizen of Mexico. She grew up in a household rooted in Mexican heritage while I grew up in a home speaking only English with heritage confined to the Southwest states of the U.S. Predominantly, this is what establishes the cultural difference between me and her.…

I interviewed my sociology instructor Chelsea Bullard; she is a red head and has a very bubbly personality. In class she smiles and laughs frequently. Interviewing her was interesting because she is a grad student and has been in school for seven years and has two- three more years to go. Her experiences can be helpful for people that are undecided about their major. Declaring a major can be very scary. It’s normal for college students to find a new passion while in college straying from their intended major.…

Immigrants are created through hardships, weather they be monetary, location based, or otherwise. They are a breed of people created through circumstance. This reigns true for a recent interviewee of mine from Chihuahua, Marianna. A girl only the age of 16 who, by definition, moved from her own country for permanent residence in the US. After an extensive (short) interviewing process I was than asked to compare either a personal story of immigration within my family or broadly relate the hardships of an old school mexican immigrant that goes by the handle of a “Bracero”. To that of the experiences of Marianna. Seeing as how I lack the one to one equivalence to relate to any form of an immigrant I will be comparing my dad's upbringing (or lack…

My interviewee, R.M ethnicity is Filipino and Chinese. Both of her parents are Filipino and Chinese. There are some differences of the way she follows her culture and how her parents follow their culture. She is 21 years of age and was born in the United States, but her parents were born in the Philippines. When growing up she went to a Presbyterian church because that is the religion her parents. Today as an adult, she chose to be non-denominational because she feels that Presbyterian religion was to traditional for her. About 80% of Filipinos are Catholics and some are from the Protestant churches and others are from the Aglipay church (McBride, n.d.). Her family speaks Tagalog, which is the national language in the Philippine society and their second is English (McBride, n.d.).…

The interview with Professor Golden provided an enlightening inside image into the profession. First, careful research into graduate schools is needed if teaching is planned. Many graudate schools no longer offer a composition specialization, only literary(Golden). Another fascinating piece of knowledge was, for the remedial education classes many institutes have a hard time finding staff to teach the courses. They can often be taught at the Bachelor’s level; thus allowing a graduate student to get more practicle experience and pay. There may be additional positions opening soon. Rumors have been circulating for years of a retire-off; as many humanities disciplines have faculty well past the standard retirement age (Golden). In the end, the interview was one of the most useful of the tools, as it gave me direct first hand insight from a professional in the field.…
