1.1 The early years
Cathay Pacific Airways was found on 24 September in 1946. American Roy C Farrell and Australian Sydney H de Kantzow are the founders. As a matter of fact, the airways based in Shanghai in 1940, but the two men moved to Hong Kong and set up the airline eventually. The two men put up HK$1 to register the airline.

1.2 Company Name
“Cathay” this word is very elegant and classic. “Pacific” means the founders think that their company will fly cross Pacific one day. The Chinese name for Cathay Pacific based on a Chinese idiom meaning "Grand and Peaceful”.

1.3 1940s-1950s
The company began to operate passenger flights to Manila, Bangkok, Singapore and Shanghai initially. The first plane called “Betsy” which the planeload is 3000 people for first year. The expansion was very fast. In 1948, one of Hong Kong's leading trading companies, the Swire Group took a 45% share in Cathay Pacific. After eighteen years the airline was founded, it carried its one millionth passenger and acquired its first jet engine aircraft Convair 880 in 1964. In the 1970s, Cathay Pacific installed a computerized reservation system and flight simulators.
The airline acquired first Boeing 747 in 1979 and applied for traffic rights to begin flying to London in 1980.
On 15 May 1986, the airline went public and listed in the Main Board of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

1.5 1990s – 2000s
Cathay Pacific and its parent company, Swire Pacific, got an important shareholding in Dragonair and a 75% stake in cargo airline Air Hong Kong in 1994. On 21 May 1998,
