Invisible Disability Discrimination
Who do you think of when you hear the word “disabled” or “disability”? Those in a wheelchair or the blind? While they are both accurate, some people have an invisible disability. Whether someone has a mental, physical, or invisible disability, a common trait is shared among them: discrimination. Work places. schools, or even on the streets, the disables are not treated equally. It is important to learn and understand why the discrimination of the disabled is still occurring in the twenty-first century. To understand that, the past, present, and future of the discrimination of the disabled in the United Kingdom. In the past, the discrimination was much more predominant than it is today. Colin Barnes wrote, in 1985, “Discriminatory action against the physically or cognitively less able in some form or other has been an integral part of almost every society throughout history.” Discrimination towards the disabled will always be there, and always has. However, people fail to see what that effect has on those with disabilities. Schools can also help prevent bully of disabled children by stopping any negative interactions happening and taking all the precautions they would take with a nondisabled child. In the workplace, employers can work towards equal treatment of disabled employees and make sure no discrimination is occurring (Citizens Advice). According the the director of the Special Olympics Chicago, we can all help work towards a better future for the disabled, in order to help ourselves and our peers become more open minded and accepting of others regardless their disabilities. The disabilities discrimination act was made for individuals who suffer from a disability this right was made so even they can have the same rights as everyone else. They don’t want any individual with a disability to feel as if though they are not missing out on anything just because they are not able to do such things. The act speaks up for people who are not confident enough to get across all their rights they are entitled to. The Act also still applies. The individuals this act helps are disabled individuals who suffer from illnesses like; down syndrome, dyslexia and mental health problems. The act also helps individuals from not getting treated any different just because they may not be able to do things others can without disability this act is here to stop discrimination like this. Sometimes there may be no reasonable adjustment, and the outcome is that a disabled person is treated less favorably. For example, if a person was not able to understand the implications of entering into a mortgage or loan agreement, and they did not have anyone authorized to act for them, it would not make sense to require a bank or building society to enter into that agreement.
