Irish Archbishop James Ussher's Account Of Young Earth Creationism
Young earth creationism is the belief that the earth along with the rest of the universe is only five to six thousand years old. The theorists who defend this idea base their defense off of the bible’s six day account of creation. Genesis chapter one gives a very specific process in which God created the universe by making a certain part of it one day at a time. This process according to the Old Testament only took six days. According to American Biology Teach Randy Moore “the museum [of Creationism] and Young-Earth creationism are based on Irish Archbishop James Ussher's (1581-1656) claim that creation occurred in 4004 BC.” (Moore, 2008, pp.326). Since young earth creationism was technically founded by Archbishop James Ussher’s date of 4004 …show more content…
Many Christians believe in a theory known as Old-Earth creationism which tries to fit the Bible’s account of creation to what secular scientist say was a process that took billions of years. The more popularly held belief amongst Christians is the idea known as young-earth creationism. Young-Earth Creationism focuses on the literal Biblical account of creation. Timothy H. Heaton describes it by saying “young earth creationists are busy trying to build a detailed model of earth history based on a literal reading of the Book of Genesis” (Heaton, 2009, pp. 1342). Young earth creationism is one of the most Biblically accurate beliefs about the origin and age of the earth because it focuses on the literal account the Bible gives. Instead of taking the words figuratively like old-earth and theistic evolution supporters or ignoring it completely like secular scientists do, young earth creationism factors in the original language the account is described in to form a comprehensive length of …show more content…
The conflict rises because young earth creationism describes the earth as only being six thousand years old whereas evolution is a widely accepted scientific explanation for the species and is a process that takes millions of years. According to Eugene C. Scott, a science’s accepted and factual explanation for existence is evolution but only forty four percent of Americans actually believe is, when describing the reason for the gap in belief he attributes it to biblical beliefs like young earth creationism (Scott, 1997, pp. 263). Scott is very accurate in saying that theology is the reason for so much distrust in evolution. Which is where the conflict arises between secular scientist and creationists like young earth creationists. The possibility that the earth is indeed created by God would have a lot of moral obligation for people who do not want to have to follow them. The possibility of evolution has the potential to steer individuals away from living their life believing in a higher purpose. Although theistic evolutionists attempt to combine the two, they are really very much opposite and have totally counter acting implications and this is where the conflict between the two is

At first, it may appear as though there are many different explanations of how the earth came to be; however, with a closer look one can see that all explanations have the same message. Science and the Bible, often considered polar opposites, tell the same story just with different words. For instance, Genesis One and The World’s Biggest Membrane describe an ongoing process of creation. It is clear in Genesis One that God did not get it right the first time. After creating man God thinks, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” (2:18-19) Immediately following this thought God forms ‘wild animals’ and ‘all the birds in the sky’, unfortunately, this attempt is unsuccessful. God has no success until he eventually creates a woman from the man, to be his helper. He goes through a process of trial and error, rather than it happening all at once. Therefore, it is clearly evident that some form of evolution took place before the earth was completed for the time being. Lewis Thomas’ ideas parallel this when talking about the atmosphere. He talks about…

Experiences, circumstances and values shape the way we think, and give us a foundation for what will become our “worldview.” In order to make a decision on what these beliefs are, we can make judgments based on both faith and scientific knowledge. The origin of Progressive Creationism brings lessons from the Bible into balance with evidence from contemporary science. Progressive Creationism makes room for explanations to scientific findings by interpreting a much longer time frame for creation, but it does not negate an God as being present at every stage, and responsible for the miracles of the creation of life. Influences that have led me to consider this position come from family, church, science classes, and my own personal interpretation…

The Origin of Old-Earth Geology and its Ramifications for Life in the 21st Century, by Doctor Terry Mortenson, is a journal article that claims to be about Old Earth Geology history, and perceived consequences that this ideology has inflicted on our society today. In actuality, this article provides little knowledge or background on the Old-Earth theory. This article utilizes most of its text explaining Scriptural Geology, key individuals of Scriptural Geology, arguing the validity of the Young-Earth belief, and closing with an over generalized assessment of Old-Earth theory’s impact on society.…

Historic Creationism correlates with my view as a Christian that the Bible is a poetic and historically accurate accounting of how we as humans came to be in this awe- inspiring world while holding to the scientific probability that the earth is billions of years old. Philosophers, theologians and lay people have forever debated creation, and I for one, believe there is room for more than one opinion. No one will know for sure until the day Jesus returns to shed his divine light on all his believers. Only then will the mystery of creation be…

Many Christian scholars are open to the belief in an old earth. One of these scholars is Colin Humphreys who believes that radioactive dating methods aren’t as accurate as most people think but they can still prove that we have a very old earth. Greg Koukl, is another Christian apologist, speaker, philosopher, and author who believes that the answer to the old earth/new earth lies in the heavens. The stars show light that takes millions of years to get to us. He argues that since were seeing light from the stars, because there millions of light years away, the earth must have been created millions of years ago. John Ankerberg argues that the seventh day of creation is thousands of years long as well as believing the third and sixth days of creation were longer than twenty four hours. “Everyone agrees that it has been at least thousands of years since the time of creation, yet the Bible declares that God rested on the seventh day after His six days of creation (Gen. 2:2-3). According to the book of Hebrews, God is still in His Sabbath rest from creation (4:3-5); hence, the seventh day has been at least six thousand years long, even on the shortest of all the chronologies of humankind (Ankerberg).” He believes the third day was longer than twenty four hours because God created plants and they fully matured, which takes longer than twenty four hours. The reason for his belief in the sixth day being longer is because of the many things God did on this day. He created Adam and Eve as well as creating thousands of animals who were all named by. All of these things would have been very hard to accomplish in the twelve hours of light there were.…

There are many varieties including progressive creationists, who make a link with bible accounts and the big bang theory, and day age creationists who believe in the Genesis account of creation however state that each of the 6 days of creation in the bible was actually a period of millions of years.…

In the Bible it clearly stated in Genesis 1 -5 how the earth was made and the order that God created things and as the Bible states He says that things were good. The scripture itself speaks of only six literal days used to create the earth. As stated by Terry Mortenson, MDiv, PhD (2011) the thoughts of a young earth creationist are as follows “Young-earth creationists believe that the creation days of Genesis 1 were six literal (24-hour) days, which occurred 6,000–12,000 years ago. They believe that about 2,300–3,300 years before Christ, the surface of the earth was radically rearranged by Noah’s…

However, young earth creationist believe that the world is only approximately six thousand years old. According to the Christian Bible, if we were to follow the chronology of many of its books including Genesis, Exodus, Galatians and 1 Kings, we would gather a general timeline of when God created the universe and the Earth. No where in the Bible does anyone give an exact date; however, we can get a very close estimate and rough explanation why the earth is not 4.5 billion years old. According to evidence, it is physically impossible.…
