Irony In Yann Martel's Life Of Pi
TONE PARAGRAPH: IRONY

There is a sense of irony in Yann Martel’s novel ‘Life of Pi’. “You are so bored you sink into a state of apathy so close to a coma…in your boredom there are elements of terror… and in the grip of terror -the worst storm- you yet feel boredom, a deep weariness with it all.”(p217) Pi feels terror yet in the midst of that terror is the ironic part; he’s bored. One would expect Pi to be hopeless while on the lifeboat, yet it’s the opposite. He is hopeful and believes one should find happiness anywhere one can find it. “You get your happiness where you can. You reach a point where you’re at the bottom of hell, yet you have your arms crossed and a smile on your face, and you feel you’re the luckiest person on earth. Why? Because at your feet you have a tiny dead fish.”(p217) most wouldn’t consider finding a dead fish lucky, but Pi does, for being in his situation changes one’s perspective and that finding a dead fish is lucky. What happens is the very

“But fate decided that my parents and I and the three wise men, as I shall call them, should meet one day on the Goubert Salai seaside esplanade and that my secret should be outed.”(p64) Up to this point Pi has kept his practice of many religions a secret, and meeting all three ‘wise men’ at once isn’t something Pi looks forward to; for he knows it’s not a good idea for them all to know. This leads to an internal conflict----“When I saw the first, I smiled; by the time I had laid eyes on the third, my smile had frozen into a mask of horror. When it was clear that all three were converging on us, my heart jumped before sinking low.”(p65) This shows that Pi is nervous and doesn’t want this to happen, and while all this is happening, Pi is thinking about what to do. When they ask him to choose one religion he says, “Bapu Gandhi says that all religions are true…I just want to love

For example, Ambrose Bierce's short story, "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" has very ironic elements to it. Just about the whole story itself is quite ironic. Peyton Farquhar, the main charter, is being hung. In the seconds of dying, he stretches the couple of seconds out into a long-lasting dream. He imagines himself swimming away while dodging bullets, and then he gets into the forest where he must make a long and miserable trip back to his house. Just as he is about to reach his wife's arms his neck breaks and he dies, but he didn't die there, he died long ago at the bridge. Bierce makes you truly think that Farquhar has escaped from death, but just as you think you are going to witness a happy ending, you figure out Peyton Farquhar has died at Owl Creek Bridge.…

The author Steinbeck actually uses a lot of irony in the entire novel. One of the major irony appears in the book is the scene when George kills Lennie, because he wants to protect Lennie from other people such as Curley who might treat Lennie in a violent way. Ironically, George takes Carlson’s shotgun to kill Lennie, and this shotgun is actually the one is used for killing Candy’s dog. It is also irony since the ranch hands do not feel sympathy for Lennie’s death and the fact that George loses his best friend, although they felt sorrow for Candy loss of his old dog. Slim is the only one who notices the fact of the shooting, and he tends to comfort George by telling him “you hadda” do it. Moreover, since George and Lennie is best friend to…

Ever thought about how many religions you can believe in? Is it right or wrong to believe in more than one religion? Martel describes how Pi loves God through Christianity, Hinduism, and Muslim. One day Pi and his family were at a park and there was a priest, pandit, and imam came up to them and said they wanted Pi to make up his mind regarding which religion he believes in. The wise men argued about which one Pi should believe in and he could not decide because he loves and is faithful in all. He replied, “Bapu Gandhi said, ‘All religions are true’ I just want to love God” ( 69, Life of Pi). Therefore, Pi states that he just wants to love God no matter how many different religions he practices. Even though his family made fun of him and doubted him about his belief and the wise men were mad that Pi did not make a decision on what religion to believe in that did not stop Pi from practicing them. Martel makes this believable throughout the book by using imagery to show how passionate Pi is about religion. Also, Martel's imagery captured the different stories Pi told about why he was Hindu. One example is when Pi is describing all of the different parts of Hinduism and why he is a Hindo. One part that Pi describes is the religious food that Hindus prepare and goes into depth about how they smell and look. Another part that…

In the novel, Lord of the Flies, William Golding describes the boys’ perception of the “beast” on the mountain, creating dramatic irony. When Sam and Eric first discover the beast, Golding reveals that the creature was merely a dead parachutist whose corpse was tangled within the trees. However, the boys continue to assume that Jack, and Roger climb up the mountain in search of the creature. The darkness of the night prevents the boys from recognizing what the beast truly is. Their perspective is further distorted when Jack suggests that they, “‘…creep forward on hands and knees…’” (Golding 122) to hunt the beast. Because they are crawling on the ground, the dead parachutist appears to be “bulging” at them, as if he was an animal. Furthermore,…

In Chapter 26 of Foster’s How to Read Literature Like a Professor, he explains that any great literary work is dripping with irony. At first glance, a reader may not see the it, but a closer look at a book like Kate Chopin’s The Awakening will make a reader snicker at all the irony that comes to light. In The Awakening, the relationship between protagonist, Edna, and her husband is ironic. As Edna is approaching, sunburned, he looks at his wife “as one looks at a valuable piece of property which has suffered some damage” (Chopin, 7). Mr. Pontellier feels as though he owns his wife, but throughout the book she ignores his opinions, has affairs, and eventually leaves him. The relationship with her husband is not the only ironic one Edna has; she has a love hate relationship with her children. Trying to appease her “mother woman” friend, Adele, Edna says, “I would give my life for my children; but I wouldn’t give myself” (Chopin, 80). However, Edna’s death was very selfish because instead of saving her children, she took away their mother. Edna’s death was Chopin’s great irony in The Awakening. At the end of the book, Edna wades, into the sea, purposefully, until “it [is] too late; the shore [is] far behind her, and her strength [is] gone” (Chopin, 190). Edna’s great awakening, her realization of freedom and self, leads to her suicide. Once a reader is trained to look for irony, she will never stop seeing it, adding depth and humor to the reading…

Edgar Allan Poe uses irony to help his readers understand that everything isn’t what it seems. In the story, “The Masque of Red Death”, Poe has the setting in Prince Prospero’s castle, where he holds a masquerade ball for thousands and thousands of guests. Poe prints, “And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all” (61). The irony that Prince Prospero has is that he believes he can escape the Red Death, but in the very end, he is killed by the terrible disease. The narrator’s fear of the disease has lead him to hold a masquerade ball to get his mind and all his guests minds off the fact that death is near and coming for them.…

In Lord of the flies the conversation at the end of chapter 5 is ironic because the boys speak about the parents in a way that seems like they are trying to show the parents as perfect. At the end of chapter 5 the ironic thing that should not be happening when the boys were giving up is wanting their family to be there. Piggy one of the characters, even says “I wish my auntie was here.” (94) This answers the prompt since it shows that the boys were just giving up and they were probably thinking that the things on the island would get completed well if adults were there. In the book, the boys think that the adults “wouldn’t set fire to the island. Or lose (kids).” (94) The prompt gets answered here since they think adults don’t make mistakes…

Irony is deliberately shown through the leading female characters in the short stories “The Story of an Hour,” “A Rose for Emily,” and also “A Good Man is Hard to Find.” These stories place these women in ironic situations based around their time period and their location. The ironic situations that the authors place these female characters in are largely based around the events that are occurring in that time and place. The irony in the stories is revealed through the actions of the main female characters. “The story of an Hour” and “A Rose for Emily” both exhibit irony through a story dealing with death and freedom. “A Good Man is Hard to Find” shows irony through the pushiness of the main character. All of the actions that the characters…
