Diversity is one of the most important thing in the current globalized society. Inclusion on the campus is the key for the overall success of students as the different background bring in different ideas and the exposure of different views in the real world. University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign tries to be a very inclusive and safe campus but as institutions is made up of humans, there are some issues on campus. The most pressing issues of diversity and inclusion on campus at Illinois include the Chief mascot, undocumented students, and gender inequality.
Chief Illiniwek was the official symbol of the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, associated with the University's intercollegiate athletic programs, from 1926 to February 21, 2007. The Chief remains a divisive figure, with many fans and alumni longing for its return and Native American groups and their supporters criticizing it as an out-of-date and offensive stereotype. Issues like all gender bathrooms, safety from sexual assault and the discrimination in the workplace needs more attention as these are not helping the university to become an inclusive campus. There is an awareness on all gender bathrooms, but these are not implemented at every place on campus making it hard for the LGBTQ community. The other most important issue is the security, the encounters of sexual assault makes the students fear than feeling inclusive. The lack of security or safety creates some emotional barriers making the divisions among the students. The difference in pay at work is not a problem in UIUC but in the nation and even in the world.
