Jack Dickey Descriptive Writing
The thrills of the people around us were exciting. Everyone is almost bursting for the moment their kid's name is called off of the speaker. As I look around, I see the joy in everyone's eyes and decide to take a picture. The enthusiasm in my nana’s eyes started to glow up the gym. We are all anxious about hearing the name “Jakob Dickey”. There is no other feeling like it. The sparkling glow was attacking the air from my Aunt Kim’s excitement. No one knew if he would make it, but we were so glad he did. This was the moment he was about to graduate. This would be his shining night, and the glow of their smiles showed it. It felt like hours before they started to call the names, but we didn't care. Why would you? It is a special night anyway. The people behind my Nana and my Aunt Kim didn't seem as happy as my whole family. They look as though they are there for disappointment, as for what should've been there for happiness and joy. They look as though they are lost, and don't know where they are. It is as if they are the opposites of what my Aunt Kim and Nana’s feeling are. My family is extremely happy, and they are as though disappointed. They are on a cloud of joy thundering. …show more content…

As I snap the shot, Principle Graves chimes into the first part of the ceremony. Everyone was jumping with joy, and shouting WOOOO, as he starts to sing the words he has been practicing for months. As the speeches go on, and everyone is waiting for it to be over they finally pull the graduating class to the front. They all start walking down the aisle to sit in the last seat oh high school and are all about to burst. My Nana and Aunt Kim are glowing more than ever at this point. It was as the seats were holding them up as high as possible to make sure they saw

32 “Well its actually happening ma’, I’m goin’ back to school.”Rufus said. “I want you to know, I truly am proud of you Rufus.” His mother replied. Curtis and Janet went to a different school then Rufus but he still walked them to school then walked himself to school. On his way to school a car followed him very slowly but Rufus kept walking. When he got to school it looked the same on the outside that it always had. Rufus pushed open the doors at Searingtown School and yelled “I’m back!” All of his friends ran over to hug him. He went down to the office to get a tour he thought he didn’t need because he remembered every single solitary thing about this place. While the tour was going on everything going on was a blur. He looked left, right and left again, admiring the changes the school had made. “Wow” he sighed. “Is there a problem Rufus?” the tour guide asked. Rufus answered, “When I was here the wall paint was all chipped, there were broken windows and holes in the walls.” “Oh ok, well that concludes our tour and this door on your right is your first period class.” The tour guide replied. Rufus walked in and sat at an available seat at the back of the class room. He opened his notebook and took notes even though he didn’t understand anything that was going on. By the time 5th period came around it was time for lunch he was starving. All of his friends called him over and asked him to sit with him. Momma didn’t make him a big lunch because they didn’t have that much food in the house and then needed to split it 3 different ways. Allison who used to have a big crush on Rufus sat right next to him. Mitchell and Charlie sat across from him and Christina, Alisha and Sammy sat around them. When the bell rang he went to his locker and when he got to class he looked out the window and saw the same car that followed him to school. The only person he thought of was Simon. But he didn’t have a car? Rufus ran to the office to explain the…

As they opened the last bedroom door on the first floor, tears pooled in the eyes of a man who had decades of living ______ on his face. Though a fresh, white stubble was emerging on his chin and rosacea had settled on his cheeks and nose, Jesse youthfully shouted the three words that (something something something like maybe lost their meaning idk, changed path of his life, never failed to soothe him, some shit, come back make this sound good. ) The former choir conductor clumsily forced a Christmas CD into his boombox, brought the sound to the highest volume, and energetically gestured his left hand to direct the chorale of grandchildren around his bed. Despite his inability to vocalize each word, Jesse belted out each note in sheer delight. When “Jingle Bells” had ended, each child received a dollar bill and a handful of hard caramels. His sprightly eyes illuminated with excitement as he eagerly awaited a reaction for his gifts. One by one, Jesse’s four grandchildren bent over and awkwardly gave the left side of his body a hug. As they pulled away, visible tear droplets were streaming down his face. His emotional personality only intensified when his eleven-year old granddaughter sang the first verse of “Bless the Broken Road” by Rascal Flatts. Not realizing that only half of the school day had passed, I sat in the school parking lot for two hours. I had planned on grading essays on a play we’d just read in my english class, but I couldn’t bring myself to do any thing but think of Gene. Finally, Summer, my six year old daughter and Finny, my eight year old son came to the car. Gene had just been admitted to the hospital this morning and the kids didn’t know yet so I explained to them, with as little detail as possible, what was going on and we drove to the…

On February 26th, 2005 I walked into Mrs. Johnson's residence for our discussion of what is one of the happiest days of her life. It was an inviting house. The room smelled like vanilla and everything was very tidy like most expected mothers houses usually are. Mrs. Johnson is a long time friend so I notice the excitement in here eyes to talk to me about her new addition. She said that nobody has ever wanted to write about her feeling of her pregnancy and with two other children excited to have an adult to talk too. We sat down on her couch and she turned toward me eager to know what I was going to ask.…

The smell of molding laundry always filled the air at my cousin Rachel’s old Blue Island house. As we walked down the dark, narrow, creaking stairs, we all knew weren’t allowed down there but we somehow always stumbled down into the basement where my much older cousin Joey’s room and hang out was. He was rarely home when my sister Haley and I slept over, so all three of us would rummage through his things. We were always told not to even come close to touching his band equipment but we never really listened to that. We later found out about a man named Tony Lovato, my cousin’s semi-good friend with whom he jammed out with every once in a while. Many know of this man as the lead singer to the band Mest,…

As a memoir, this is truly unique. It must have taken tremendous effort to write this often painful recollection of your own life. Yet, the exercise of exploring the dynamics of such a dysfunctional family, and the parental unit as a separate entity analyzed by a daughter, had to be a revelation and a healing experience. One merit of the work is the strength of character bred into these children, celebrated and seen in…
