James Wilson Just Take Away Their Guns Summary
The article “JUST TAKE AWAY THEIR GUNS” written by James Q. Wilson gives a detailed look of why people may take an anti-gun control stance. Reading the title, you may expect this article to be for gun control, but in the first paragraph it’s clear what side the author is on. Furthermore, he continues that getting guns out of the hands of Americans would be an impossible task. Providing evidence for that claim he states that “There are some 200 million guns in private ownership” (Wilson 1). Knowing this information, it gives us an insight on how large America’s gun collection is, and how hard it will be to retrieve all those guns. That is, only a small number of criminals tend to use these guns to their benefit which seems to be a reoccurring theme throughout the article. Deeper into the article Wilson writes about how law-abiding people use guns as self-defensive every year. Knowing this, Wilson provides evidence from Gary Kleck to state “guns are used— that is, displayed or fired — for defense purposes more than a …show more content…
No, unfortunately banning guns won’t stop them from being used and will only encourage the black market to grow. While this is true, creating a law against the use of these guns will greatly stop production to the general public. Launching a government buyback will help to minimize the size of the black market and give a reason for gun owners to sell their weapons. On the other hand, Wilson states a possible solution to illegal carrying is “encouraging the police to take guns away from people who carry them without a permit” (Wilson 1). While this may stop public carrying, it doesn’t eliminate illegal guns stored elsewhere. As for frisking, its already a contentious act with many public rights groups speaking against it. Not all problems will be solved by making the use of these weapons illegal, but it’ll hopefully reduce the weapons collection the United States

Gun control will not stop crime, responsible citizens can’t protect themselves effectively, and there can be acceptable regulations for guns. Gun control won’t work. Banning or controlling, whether what is being banned is an item or ideology, has never worked. Prohibition is a strong example of banning an item not working. In 1920 the United States government banned the manufacturing, transportation, and sale of alcoholic beverages (Prohibition, United States).…

In America guns have been a part of the country’s society since its birth. Throughout history the citizens of the US have used firearms to protect the nation, protect their families, to hunt for food and to engage in sporting activities. The issue of Guns and gun control takes on a proportion of extreme magnitude. Weighing the rights and liberties of the individual against the welfare and safety of the public has always been a precarious balancing act. In the United States, gun control is one of these tumultuous issues that has both sides firmly entrenched in their positions. Those parties in favor of gun ownership and the freedom to use and keep arms, rely on the fact that the provision for such rights is enshrined in their constitution. In this climate of growing violence, rife with turmoil and crime, gun advocates feel more than ever that their position is justified. As citizens of the “Land of the Free” possessing a gun is a fundamental right, and may even be a necessity. Anti- gun lobbyists point to the same growing violence and gun related crimes in an effort to increase the control of firearms sales and regulations.…

Criminals are going to get and use guns illegally whether they are available to law-abiding citizens or not. No matter how many weapons the government tries to take away they are still going to be on the street. Gun control laws will not stop violence. Even if all the guns were banned and did away with, if a criminal wanted to commit a mass crime he will find a new weapon of choice to carry out the act. People have seen over time that more laws do not stop violence from occurring. There is no way to stop mass violence. Criminals will commit violence or obtain a gun whether or not laws are stricter. Every year, more than two thousand people die in the United States from gun related injuries (Hartigan & Lammas, 2002). When a crime is committed it seems the weapon is always the blame. Lots of these gun related injuries come from misuse in guns by minors. Another big factor that causes guns to be the victim is the people that aren’t eligible to have a firearm. Although when a weapon is used to help a bad situation it usually goes unrewarded. In many cases guns are used to stop violence or crimes before they can be fully carried out. They have many different ways on handling these circumstances, but none will solve gun crimes. Statistics show that people who are attacked by a criminal are safer if they use a weapon to resist their attacker than if they do not resist. Resisting crime with a…

There has been a lot of talk about banning guns lately. There are already many laws on the books that regulate gun ownership. However, criminals need not worry as the black market has no such regulations, and will sell to anyone with the cash to purchase guns. Banning guns is not only unconstitutional, it is an ineffective strategy to combat gun violence. There is nothing preventing anyone from going to any public places and start shooting. If you take away gun rights from those who go through the legal motions then there will be more casualties in the event of a shooting. Guns should be permitted to be carried by persons of verified integrity in gun free zones where the greatest risk of casualties…

Banning guns is an issue today that is very difficult to talk about, especially when it concerns mass shooting or anything alike. I side with the second opposing argument. The first argument talks about theoretical things that can never happen. Instead, the second argument talks about a real solution to the problem. The solution to “ boost the defensive capacities of prospective victims.” This is more realistic in my opinion. They both talk about how it is inevitable and how there is basically nothing we can do to stop someone from killing people if they really want to. If I were to add to each argument I strongly add upon the statement above. I believe no matter what if someone wants a gun they will find a gun, whether its legal or not. If…

Implementing a gun control policy will not really be effective in making all guns vanish in society. This policy will also not do anything to make guns safer in society. The reality is that guns have become necessary at present so that people can safeguard themselves, their families and their properties from any harm or danger that could be done to them by criminals. Thus, if guns are already banned in society, the people can no longer have access to something that can be very…

Recently, a question was asked if outlawing guns in the United States would help solve the high crime rates. I am not certain banning guns will solve the problem because people will figure a way to obtain guns just like they are able to obtain illegal drugs. The problem is not the guns, but the bad people that get a hold of guns. There are many benefits with owning a gun. Guns are used for hunting, recreation, and for protection against bad people with guns. According to "Could Guns Really Be Effectively Banned In America?" (2012), “The smart solution, though, to the gun problem is gun freedom. Those who want to carry guns…

People are still using guns to resort to violence, to terrorize communities, and to commit suicide. Gun control laws don’t seem to work despite the many that have been implemented, and that is why many gun rights supporters seem enraged. But gun control does work if done correctly. If the U.S. were to implement a way to control the amount of guns in the country, who owned them, and where they were located, gun violence may be able to decrease. But the truth is that there is still a black market for automated weapons, people still own guns illegally, and those same guns are used to commit crime. If guns were to be eradicated, the amount of injustice would drop significantly, crime would still exist, but the deaths that would be avoided would make the decision…

Statistics show that the occurrence of violent crime is much lower in countries that do not allow citizens to carry weapons. Although it is doubtful that the United States would ever completely outlaw the private ownership of weapons. Wouldn’t it be nice to lower the risk of being shot? <br>The growing gun related death toll in the U.S. has to come to a turning point. Stripping away the constitutional right to bear arms might have the effect that only criminals will have access to guns. It is important to understand that in a society where both criminals and law abiding citizens have access to guns the likeliness of an innocent person getting shot, when both parties are waving guns, is probably greater than if only criminals have guns. A ban on firearms might not be appealing as a short-term solution but it is important that people don't limit their thinking to their generation and not think about the safety of their children, grandchildren and the society people are creating today for them to live in.…

Most people know that guns are one of America's culture, just like the marijuana. People know what are illegal things, but they will still find a way to obtain them. So, banned guns can't prevent criminals. If the guns banned, criminal can still use other weapons to kill people. For example, in 1976, Washington DC is illegal to own any handguns or to keep any type of guns in home unlocked. However, Washington DC has the most criminal rates in united states. Whenever the guns is illegally, criminals can make any weapons, such as bombs, criminals can make bombs by themselves. Most of time, it's the personal's problems, criminals who caught by police always have mental ill or they dissatisfying about this country. Therefore, Government need strength the gun education and some safety classes about using guns. Ban guns is not a good solution, because the problem is not about guns.…

Banning guns is also a waste of time, it will be almost impossible to eliminate all the guns around American someone will always have a gun or two to sell and so on. Or maybe making their own guns and so on. Like the Balanced Politics article said “Banning guns will create another potentially large source of organized criminal revenue, as a black market for guns will surely develop.” Just imagine how much more time and effort of the police will be taken looking for illegal gun exchanges or bringing down the guns black market. We need our police patrolling for violent crimes not looking for guns being sold. It is already bad enough they spend most of their time making drug arrests more often than others. So why add unnecessary gun arrests too?…

In closing, many people who argue for unnecessarily high restrictions on firearms do not do research on the actual statistics and facts and instead rely on moral principles blame guns destructive possibilities without giving a thought of other options of destruction. Let us say that a ban was placed on firearms. Honestly, who would listen to this new governmental demand. Few law-abiding citizens would gladly hand over all firearms for the “perceived betterment of the state.” But more than likely many people would not turn over their weapons specifically criminals based on the fact they have not followed a law in their lives, thus making them criminals. The perceived notion that criminal organizations would just hand over the only thing that makes that old lady hand over her purse or the bank teller hand over the money is absurd and a fallacy of an idealistic world. If criminals are the only ones left with guns (omitting police and military,) who is going to stop them from looting a local store or home by the time the police get their it will be too late? Criminals would no longer have to fear the average Joe from pulling a gun on them while they rob him. If anything, crime would get even worse and criminals would become even more brazen and ludicrous. If we sent police and other law enforcement to retrieve the weapons from criminals tension between police and criminals would surely rise increasing violence against police. Also, as was seen during prohibition, people might try to make their own guns, just like bathtub gin, and end up blowing themselves up and causing more injury than with properly built firearms today. What will work is to develop a system that recognizes the different types of targets. So that trying to shoot a person would result in the gun not firing and authorities being called. This would help ensure that the guns still can be used for things like hunting and sport. Also, we need to help potential future criminals realize that they do not have…
