Jessica Mulholland Why Age Matters Summary
In the article “Why Age Matters” by Jessica Mulholland the author discusses how nearly 22% of the American population is of retirement age. Many are living below poverty and in need of supplementary income. In Aiken South Carolina they have come up with a way to help not only seniors but preschoolers as well. Through a “Foster Grandparents” program that visits schools, preschools and before and after school centers. The grandparents are fed, paid a small stipend, and given a purpose for getting out of bed each day.
The seniors aren’t the only ones who benefit from the program, students get an adoptive grandparent in their lives to help them with homework, someone to talk to and make them feel good about themselves. Seniors get paid a

Gawande explains that many assisted living facilities will promise a better way. He asserts that as we age, we tend to “narrow in” and prefer to spend time with people we know and love rather than expanding our social networks. There are two reasons he provides as to why assisted living facilities typically cannot fulfil the desire for connection. First, we must recognize that assisted living facilities are a service business and Dr. Gawande points out that there are no good metrics for evaluating how well they truly assist someone with living. Second, because the elderly usually make this decision because of their children’s insistence, the facilities cater more to the sense of protectiveness that children feel toward their parents. As one gerontologist mentioned to Dr. Gawande, “We want autonomy for ourselves and safety for those we…

The population of elderly adults is growing quickly. The oldest members of the popular baby boom generation are now over the age of 65, which means there are more seniors now than ever before in the United States. Of this age group, 43.8% are either single or widowed, and living alone (U.S. Census, 2010). Aging adults desire to remain in their own homes, and this leaves the question as to who is responsible for making sure their physical and emotional needs are being met? Many cities provide a senior community center, but are these centers able to provide support to homebound seniors who are not able to participate in on-site center activities? Cities should also focus on programs that meet the needs of homebound seniors. A senior community companionship program that makes free home visits to homebound seniors could make an overwhelmingly positive impact on their lives. A companionship program for homebound seniors should be supported as an essential community volunteer function because it enriches the lives of immobile seniors by improving their emotional and physical health, and increases their quality of…

The elderly that are at the highest risk of being poor or disadvantaged fall into categories of people who are at highest risk of being poor throughout the life course, those that fall below the poverty level during their lifetime. (Sociology, 13th Edition). The elderly that fall below the poverty level are more likely to need elder income support to transition into old age with grace. This paper will discuss how historical values of __________have influenced the extent to which America has treated elder income support as a social problem and the social policies, such as _________ designed to address elder income support. It will also address how social work’s social justice mission and what sort of social policy approach is needed to address this social problem. Jackie, nicely written but add specifics so that the…

During my childhood the community raised a child. I had nearly an entire street watching after me. There was one other child on the street and she also was an only child. She lived in a single parent home. Our street was filled with older people mostly in their 60’s. You never really saw them out and about. I do know firsthand they kept Bellsouth (telephone company) in business. The elderly couples would call whenever they thought I was doing something…

The purpose of this quantitative study is to determine the various barriers faced by grandparent caregivers. Older adults often work with their spouses who need to be cared for due to long term illnesses up until their death, as well as grandchildren and foster children. Many older people take care of their grandchildren because their own children have to go to work or because they have been granted custody due to abuse or incarceration of their children. Many older people who have been given the responsibility of raising another child so late in their life are faced with additional health issues, psychological stress, and social isolation. It is often very stressful for someone who is older to have to be a caregiver because they are already dealing with other stresses of old age such as losing their spouses, not having a lot of energy, and worrying about their own health.…
