Had Jesse prevailed in the race, he would not have experienced the period of detesting Leslie. Leslie's face would likely be another in the school's crowd, and they would never have connected as a result. Since Jess would have been the fastest student in the fifth grade, all the other kids would have begun befriending him. If he had made other friends, Leslie would still be the outcast.

Jess might have enjoyed Miss Edmunds' classes less if he had never developed a crush on her. Furthermore, he might not have less incentive to draw anymore, but he probably would continue anyway. However, since they would have never spoken before that occasion, Miss Edmunds would most likely never invite him to the art gallery. Consequently, Jess would have accompanied Leslie to Terabithia. So she wouldn't have been alone. Resulting in Leslie, Jess, or both of them dying; however, if only one of the children passed away, the other would have been traumatized by having witnessed it firsthand.
4) What if Jess asked Miss Edmunds if he could bring Leslie along to the art gallery?
If Jess asked Miss Edmunds if Leslie could join them, she would have said yes. Leslie would hopefully be available to join them and have a perfect day with her best friend and teacher. Leslie would never have drowned. However, who's to say she wouldn't have gone later that day or the following day and perished by drowning? Thus, it's likely that leaving Jess and Miss Edmunds would have done little more than delay her death.
