Jimmy Bell's Goal Strategy
Chris,

I appreciate the feedback.

I had a 3 hour strategy/goal discussion with Jimmy Bell on December 7th going over the Bell Equipment 2017 Goals program, the same program ESG has/is rolling out to all dealers. The construction of each dealer goal strategy was formed via various influencers from Elgin/Vactor, including all the RSMs, ROSMs and ESG upper management. Because of this group exercise, dealer goals for 2017 are individualized to the dealer after a group discussion of strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities given the specific dealer’s past performance and what the group believed was the best way to focus 2017 sales growth for that territory.

It is late spring and time for the DMC management team to begin the planning cycle for the next fiscal year. While CEO Tom Grant has always preferred the tried and true business strategies from Michael Porter (cost leadership, differentiation and market focus), he knows the executive team needs to be creative to set the path for the future of the company during the new planning cycle. In this highly competitive global market, DMC will face many challenges in choosing a strategic plan for the next five years. The current strategic plan includes a goal of increasing electronic component sales while establishing a more stable sales pattern and margins, but this goal is not going well. Grant passed the challenge on to his functional VPs, but he knows he has to keep a hand in to guide the overall direction and be able to sell the chosen direction to the board of directors. All functional areas in the company will have a part to play in a change in strategy, so he needs to ensure all areas are involved in the decision process. Grant is not sure what that direction should be, or even how to define the overriding problem the company now faces. In spite of the many challenges of competing in a global industry, they have to determine how to successfully compete and grow business margins.…

Proposed Solution: Success will be measured through based on a few key areas. One of these areas will be focused on customer satisfaction. As our company shifts its focus in a more innovative direction, we want to increase customer satisfaction and overall profits of the company. Tim O'Brien tells a highly emotional story, “The Things They Carried,” in which he weaves two memories of First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross's life together. These two significant parts of Cross seem to be trying to compete to be the more dominant, one being of lovely Martha from back home who has captured Cross's heart and attention; she sent him letters that “were not love letters, but Lieutenant Cross was hoping” (1) for a sweet declaration of love. Cross's other life is that of the moment, where he is in the middle of the Vietnam War. The narrator describes his as well as seven other men's journey while they venture through this danger and of the things carried by each of the men “largely determined by necessity” (1). The symbolic letters from Martha are prominent throughout the entirety of Tim O'Brien's short story, however the connotation associated with these tokens does not remain consistent.…
