In the movie John Q, John Archibald is faced with the issue of his son, Mike, needing a heart transplant. The insurance company that was used by his job denied the funds for the transplant because John was bumped down to part time from the slow season and they changed his insurance plan without informing him. Because of that, he and his wife, Denise, had to pay the two hundred and fifty thousand dollar bill themselves. But before Mike’s name could even be put on the donor receiver's list, they had to pay a deposit of thirty percent of the total cost, putting them at about seventy thousand dollars. He takes the cardiologist at the hospital hostage along with the eleven patients and workers who were in the emergency room and could not make it out before he had locked it down. When the police and military were called in, John informed them of his price, that Mike’s name be on the list. When the swat arrives, one sniper is given the go ahead to sneak into the building through an air shaft to try and take out John. He only suffers from a minor injury which is treated quickly. After the sniper makes the shot though, he falls through the tiles and is quickly taken captive.In a different part of the hospital, Rebecca Payne, the hospital administrator was putting Mike’s name on the list, which John hadn’t known about at the time. But now having this leverage peice that was the sniper, he demands that Mike be brought to the emergency room to be with his father. The exchange happened quickly and the two are reunited. After John talks with Mike, he goes back into the waiting room and informs the hostages that he will kill himself to give Mike his heart.
